Landfill losing customers, not cutting expenses

Fewer towns shipping their garbage to the Shawano landfill has put the facility in dire straits. Ervin H. Bleck
Ervin H. “Bud” Bleck, 96 , of Shawano, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 7, 2013, at a local nursing home. Born on April 6, 1917, in Clintonville, he was the son of the late Edwin H. and Lily (Hoffman) Bleck. Bud was raised in the Clintonville area. Chill summer for Jiskra
Hallie Jiskra has found success on a whole new field this summer. The 2012 Bonduel High School graduate, who participated in softball, basketball, volleyball and cross-country for the Bears, is making a name for herself in the 12-team women’s Legends Football League as a red-zone scoring threat. Jiskra has five touchdowns this season, three coming in her debut in the Green Bay Chill’s season opener against the Seattle Mist on April 6 in Seattle.
Fire department’s new brush truck in service
A new brush truck has been in service since spring with the Cecil-Washington Fire Department thanks to a donation from Trans Canada Pipeline. The 2006 F250 Ford, valued at $11,000, was given to the department last year. Firefighters then worked to refurbish it, replacing the body with a new box and adding a pump to convert the truck for fighting brush fires. “We worked on it whenever we had the time,” Fire Chief Jeff Homan said.
Radio resolution gets committee support
The Shawano County Sheriff’s Department’s request for radios that operate on the county’s new simulcast system received a 3-1 vote of support from the Public Property Committee on Wednesday. The cost to replace the department’s older radios that don’t operate with the simulcast system is $214,408, according to Sheriff Randy Wright. The Shawano County Public Safety Committee is unwilling to meet with the Public Property Committee until later to discuss evidence storage issues. The Clintonville Airport Commission learned this week that the city airport is busy and has no empty hangars. “The airport is the one department or area in the city that can fund itself,” Mike McCord, airport manager, told the Airport Commission on Monday. McCord said a new tenant is building a hangar, there are people who want to buy hangars and land is available to rent for 13 cents a square foot for plane owners who want to build hangars.
