A lumberjack show featuring fast action, skilled performers and lots of laughs will be the main attraction at the Gillett Fourth of July celebration. “It’s very family friendly. Anyone from a toddler to 100 years old will enjoy the show,” said Suzanne Hastedt-Hadley, general manager of DLW Timberworks Lumberjack Show. The Hayward company will present the show at 4, 6 and 8 p.m. in the grandstand at Zippel Park.

Triathletes are warming up in preparation for the fourth annual Kelly Lake Triathlon on Saturday, with proceeds to benefit the Shriners Hospitals for Children-Chicago. Races will begin at 7:30 a.m. with a 750-meter swim in Kelly Lake, followed by a 15.5-mile bicycle ride around White Lake and a 3.4-mile run around Kelly Lake. A small group of people started the triathlon 20 years ago.

One-run games continue to haunt the Oconto Falls American Legion baseball team. William Greenwood II has resigned as the varsity boys basketball coach at Gillett Secondary School to pursue a career in the private sector. Greenwood coached the Tigers varsity for one season, tallying a 7-17 record after replacing Matt Polomis. “He put a lot of time and effort into the program to help build a positive experience for the players and bring excitement to the basketball program,” Gillett School District Superintendent Todd Carlson

Brynn Larsen has always been competitive. After a three-sport career at Oconto Falls High School and playing softball at Concordia University in St. Paul, Minnesota, Larsen was in search of her next challenge. “I love basketball, softball, volleyball, all those sports, but I just can’t play them as good as I used to when I was younger and in shape,” Larsen said.

A Gillett man charged with taking a hostage during a standoff with sheriff’s deputies in Wittenberg was found competent last week to stand trial. Travis W. Keiler, 29, was arrested April 22 after a two-hour standoff. He faces a felony count of taking hostages while using a dangerous weapon. A preliminary hearing in the case was delayed for a competency evaluation.
