Nancy L. Stronach
Nancy L. Stronach, 63, of Shawano, passed away Thursday, July 3, 2014, in Shawano. Born on Feb. 2, 1951, she was the daughter of the late Wilber and Jeanette (Johnson) Stronach. Nancy worked as a hairdresser at Spurgeons, at Aarrowcast and at Maplelane. Nancy enjoyed helping out at the United Methodist Church. She also enjoyed spending time with her nieces and nephews and talking on the phone.

Daniel E. Sazama
Daniel E. Sazama, 81, of Shawano, passed away July 3, 2014, of pancreatic cancer. Born on Dec. 24, 1932, in the town of Seneca, he was the son the late James and Anna (Steinke) Sazama. Daniel graduated from Gresham High School in 1950. He enlisted in the Army and served in Germany. On Oct. 26, 1968, Daniel married Susan Peterson and they made their home in Shawano County, where they farmed. Daniel also worked at Pella Insurance for 33 years.

Alex Stephen Mastey
Alex Stephen Mastey, 20, passed away on July 2, 2014. Born on May 23, 1994, in Shawano, he was the son of Joe and Karyn (Vargo) Mastey. Alex was a 2012 graduate of the Shawano Community High School and was attending the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay. He enjoyed playing tennis as well as the guitar and the saxophone, but his passions were photography and snowboarding. Alex was consistently a very kind and gentle person.

Shawano blasts Bonduel, 9-3
Chase Henning didn’t want to wait until dusk for Fourth of July fireworks. Henning and the Shawano American Legion (2-5, 0-2 Fox River Valley) baseball team provided plenty of fireworks in a 9-3 win over Bonduel (2-3) Friday afternoon in front of a big crowd at Jack Reinke Field in Bonduel. Henning hit two two-run home runs and had a double as Shawano piled up 14 hits. “Chase, the numbers speak for themselves,” Shawano coach Will Gillis said.

Triathletes welcome perfect weather in Leopolis
Sid Steinke put together a triathlon to prove to a local weightlifter that big muscles do not make a person a good athlete. Thirty-one years later, the Leopolis Triathlon is still going strong as a Fourth of July tradition that brings runners from across the state to the small community for a race that tests their endurance and versatility. “We set a date, the Fourth of July, and there were 13 of us,” Steinke said of that first triathlon in 1983.

David Lloyd Sutherland
David Lloyd Sutherland, 62, of Shawano, died on Tuesday, July 1, 2014. Born on Sept. 3, 1951, in Lakeview, Michigan, he is the son of Lloyd Sutherland and the late Patricia Ann (Evans) Sutherland. David was an educator in Michigan until his retirement in 2002 and lived in the Shawano/Clintonville area for five years.

Preston Scott Pyawasay
Preston Scott Pyawasay, 63, of Keshena, died on Tuesday, July 1, 2014. Born on Feb. 1, 1951, in Keshena, he was the son of William M. Pyawasay Sr. and the late Jacqualine M. (Menore) Pyawasay. Preston enlisted in the Army and served in Germany. After service he attended Marquette University for accounting.

New contact rules won't affect SCHS
New statewide regulations restricting the amount of player-to-player contact in high school football practices will not have a major impact at Shawano Community High School. Passed by a 10-0 vote of the WIAA board of directors June 26 in Stevens Point, the new regulations do not call for anything different than what SCHS is already doing, according to football coach Al Tomow. “I like to think we weren’t the reason for the changes,” Tomow said.
