Junior Zeke Gueths and senior Daniel Boivin scored double wins Thursday to lead the Shawano Community High School boys track team to a first-place finish at the Dale Peterson Invitational at Antigo High School. The Shawano girls placed third, behind champion Medford and runnerup Clintonville. Gueths won the shot put with a throw of 44 feet, 4.5 inches. His best throw in the discus went 133-3. Boivin won the 300 hurdles in 43.12 seconds.

A Neopit man who attacked his girlfriend with a hammer last fall was sentenced this week in federal court to four years in prison to be followed by three years of supervised release. Scott A. Rettler, 45, pleaded guilty in January to an assault that caused substantial bodily injury in an Oct. 14 attack on a woman he was dating, according to court records. Shawano Dollars for Scholars will provide a record $450,000 in scholarships to area students this year, the organization announced Friday at its annual gala at The Gathering in Shawano. Nearly 100 Shawano Community High School seniors will be among the scholarship recipients. Of the $450,000, $240,000 will be earmarked for graduating seniors at SCHS headed to college or technical schools, with the average scholarship totaling $2,000.

James Duane Johnson, 79, of Navarino, passed away early Thursday morning, April 23, 2015, at Shawano Medical Center. He was born in the town of Maine on Jan. 2, 1936, son of the late Robert Johnson and Edna (Olson-Johnson) Grandy. James attended Leeman Grade School and graduated from Bonduel High School. He excelled in sports: track, basketball and football.

Allen L. Matz, 67, Mattoon, died unexpectedly on Thursday, April 23, 2015, at Langlade Hospital, Antigo. He was born on Sept. 12, 1947, in Eland, the son of the late Eddie and Violet (Wickman) Matz Sr. On. Feb. 12, 1972, Allen was united in marriage to Ethel Bierman at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Bowler. She survives. Allen was a graduate of Bowler High School.

Evelyn M. Karstedt, 96, formerly of Cecil, passed away on Wednesday, April 22, 2015, in Shawano. Evelyn was born on Dec. 26, 1918, to the late Leonard F. and Minnie (Krueger) Sederstrom in the township of Wabeno. She married Theodore “Ted” Karstedt. He preceded her in death on Aug. 28, 1983. Evelyn was a member of St. John’s United Church of Christ in Cecil. She was a member of the St.
