A new 10-year lease for the Shawano Area Agricultural Society to operate the Shawano County Fairgrounds took a step forward earlier this month.
The Shawano County Public Property Committee on Aug. 8 approved the deal, which will be forwarded to the Shawano County Board for approval at its Aug. 28 meeting.
Operation of the fairgrounds was subject to a 10-year deal that ran through Dec. 31, 2025.

Royce LaRock, 32, agreed to plead no contest Aug. 6 to a count of aggravated battery with a dangerous weapon for a stabbing that took place in 2023 in Shawano, canceling a planned trial for the week of Aug.
A Suring High School athlete is one of the Wisconsin students named to serve on the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA) inaugural Student-Athlete Leadership Team in 2024-25.
Ginger Gerndt, a Suring junior, will be one of three District 2 members. In total, there are seven districts with 27 students.
The purpose of the team is to serve as ambassadors for their peers and the WIAA while learning more about the sports industry.

The Gillett Area Chamber of Commerce has announces its highly anticipated Homecoming and Harvest Days is coming to Gillett beginning Oct. 7.
The homecoming football game takes place on Oct. 11. with games and food vendors at the school. The Harvest Days Market will be held Oct. 12 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Five of the six local libraries in Oconto County would receive reduced library aid in 2025 under the formula contained in the revised five-year library plan coming before the county board in September.
