Dennis Karcz, a devoted husband, father, brother, grandfather and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully on Aug. 20, 2024. The son of Peter and Esther (Nowak) Karcz was born on May 3, 1947, in Green Bay. On Nov. 8, 1969, he married Linda Robaidek at Assumption BVM Church. Dennis worked in the financial loan industry, assisting farmers and small businesses in northeastern Wisconsin.

Bay Port Invite Aug. 19-20 Shawano Community High School’s girls tennis team started their season with a two-day, six-match invite in the Green Bay area. On Aug. 19, the Hawks started out 2-1, then fell 0-3 on Aug. 20. In its division, Shawano played against Green Bay Preble, Howards Grove, Menominee (Michigan), Eau Claire Regis, Onalaska Luther and New Richmond. Eleven other teams competed in two other divisions.

Bay Conference Mini-Meet #3 Aug. 22 Sophia Eggert tied as the medalist with a 43 as Shawano won the Bay Conference Mini-Meet #4 at Shawano Lake Golf Course on Aug. 22. The Hawks shot a 190, while Bonduel carded a 256 for seventh place. Also scoring for Shawano were Lily Glysch with a 45, Madilyn Moesch with a 47 and Delanie Kunze with a 55. Bonduel was led by Morgan Staszak’s 59.

Shawano County Sheriff’s Department Aug. 25 Deputies responded to 29 incidents, including noise on Campground Road in the Town of Seneca; assisting with a fire on East Division Street in Shawano; operating without a license on state Highway 47 in the Town of Lessor; seven 911 calls; two reckless driving incidents; one traffic hazard; three crashes. Aug.

• On Feb. 1, a jury found Tim J. Sasman, 42, Bear Creek, guilty of first-degree sexual assault of a child younger than 13. On Aug. 19, Judge William Kussel Jr. sentenced Sasman to 12 years in prison, followed by 10 years of extended supervision with conditions. Kussel gave him credit for 200 days already served. • Maurice A. Olson, 34, Suring, pleaded no contest Aug.

Shawano County department heads have been told to trim 5% of their proposed 2025 budget or face the wrath of the county’s executive committee. That was the decision of the committee when it gathered Aug.

The Shawano School Board voted Aug. 21 to give a pay bump to substitutes serving as non-teaching staff, even though some board members felt the bump wasn’t really enough. Teachers on Call presented to the board on Aug. 12, and in that presentation, they noted the disparity in pay for aides and paraprofessionals.
