The Shawano Country Chamber of Commerce will hold its annual homecoming parade Oct. 12 at 10 a.m. on South Main Street with lineup on Elizabeth Street beginning at 9 a.m. Parade participants will have to enter the staging area off Lincoln Street.

As summer winds down and Wisconsin families, educators and staff head back to school in the coming days, I am reminded of the amazing opportunities our public schools provide. Our public schools are places where every student — regardless of their background, abilities or needs — should have equal access to education and opportunity. Classrooms in Wisconsin are often the most diverse communities in our state.

I try to avoid writing about politics and government here, because I believe the world could use a lot less of each. I try to focus on the plain fact that our lives are better when we stop looking for the right ruler and work on running our own lives.

Untimely death came calling on a regular basis in the 19th century, especially for women. Pregnancy and childbirth were a common method of culling the human herd. Many men lost their wives to the rigors of labor and delivery, and if a woman survived the ordeal, her child could easily fall victim to a fatal illness or accident. My great-great-grandmother Anna Maria Holzschuh was very familiar with the Grim Reaper’s cruel customs.

Dejon Lou (Goddake) Polzin, 92, passed away Saturday, Sept. 7, 2024, at Care Partners Assisted Living in Clintonville, where she had resided for nearly four years. Born in Bowler on June 13, 1932, Dejon was the youngest child of the late Evan and Gladys (Cronce) Goddake. She attended Bowler schools and was very involved in school and community activities, including 4-H and Future Homemakers of America.
