Sept. 9 New London 4, Shawano 3 Shawano’s tennis team lost a closely contested match to New London at home. The Hawks fought back to force three tiebreakers but fell short in the end, losing 4-3. Winning for the Hawks were Rachel Carroll at No. 2 singles 6-3, 6-0; Jaelyn Hietpas at No. 3 singles 6-0, 6-1; and Ava Hoffman at No. 4 singles 6-2, 6-1. Sept. 14 Colby/Abbotsford Invitational Bonduel’s boys won the invite at Colby scoring 35 points, 19 better than second-place Columbus Catholic’s 54. Five Bonduel runners captured spots seven through 11. Race Anvelink led the Bears, placing seventh in 18:21.91.

Sept. 10 Marshfield Tiger Invite Wittenberg-Birnamwood’s girls cross-country team won first place in the small division and second place overall at the Marshfield Tiger Invite.

A request for Shawano County department heads to trim 5% from their original 2025 budget levy proposals did not go the way county supervisors hoped. Only two departments made the requested cuts. Two departments – the treasurer’s office and the district attorney’s office – did not even respond to the request.

Shawano Community High School teacher Jeremy Hodkiewicz has been recognized as the 2024 Career Pathmaker Tech Ed Teacher award winner at the NEW Manufacturing Alliance’s 13th annual Excellence in Manufacturing/K-12 Partnerships Awards. The award celebrates Hodkiewicz’s contributions to technical education and his dedication to preparing students for successful futures across career and tech ed pathways. The Shawano Common Council unanimously approved a wheel tax — non-government speak for a local vehicle registration fee — at its Sept. 11 meeting following weeks of discussion regarding alternative revenue streams that would allow the city to continue providing current services. Owners of vehicles weighing less than 8,000 pounds who live in the city limits will have a $40 fee tacked on to the existing state registration fee.
