County evidence storage plan still on course

The Shawano County Public Safety Committee is unwilling to meet with the Public Property Committee until later to discuss evidence storage issues. lintonville airport busy, hangars filled
The Clintonville Airport Commission learned this week that the city airport is busy and has no empty hangars. “The airport is the one department or area in the city that can fund itself,” Mike McCord, airport manager, told the Airport Commission on Monday. McCord said a new tenant is building a hangar, there are people who want to buy hangars and land is available to rent for 13 cents a square foot for plane owners who want to build hangars.

Verna B. Miller
Verna B. Miller, 87, of Neopit, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 7, 2013, at a local nursing home. Born on April 10, 1926, in Neopit, she was the daughter of the late Luke and Susan (Amob) Beauprey. On June 5, 1948, she was united in marriage to Fred. F. “Bud” Miller at the St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Neopit. He preceded her in death on Nov. 7, 1982. Verna worked as a dispatcher for the Menominee County Police Department until retiring.

OWI suspect arrested again on eve of court date
A Bonduel man scheduled for arraignment Tuesday on a drunken driving charge in Waupaca County was arrested Monday night for allegedly driving drunk in Shawano County. Kevin D. Moericke, 36, was pulled over by a Shawano County sheriff’s deputy shortly before midnight after he was allegedly spotted doing 71 mph on state Highway 47 in the town of Lessor.

Bird with West Nile virus found in Keshena
The West Nile virus has been identified in a dead crow found in Keshena on the Menominee Reservation, according to the Shawano-Menominee Counties Health Department. This is the first bird that tested positive for West Nile virus in Menominee County since surveillance for the mosquito-transmitted virus began May 1, the department said. The bird was found July 29.

Ewald R. Wohler
Ewald Richard Wohler, 83, of Shawano, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 7, 2013, at a local nursing home. Born on Nov. 29, 1929, in Chicago, he was the son of the late Ewald J. and Selma (Schwartz) Wohler. After graduating from high school, he enlisted with the United States Army and served his country for two years during the Korean War. On Oct.

Sawmill noise issue resolved
A sawmill operation in Waukechon has met the requirements of its conditional use permit from Shawano County, the Planning, Development and Zoning (PDZ) Committee agreed Wednesday. The committee approved the permit on June 6, 2012, with the condition that the mill’s owner, Leroy Schrock, would take steps to suppress the noise that a sawmill operation would produce.

Tribal Council ousts Chicks
Robert Chicks was formally removed from his position as president of the Stockbridge-Munsee Community by unanimous vote of the Tribal Council this week. The council action Tuesday came two weeks after a tribal court overturned an April recall election that ousted Chicks by a vote of 224-128. The court ruled that Chicks wasn’t given proper notice of the recall effort and called on the Election Board to set a new recall election. The Election Board

Henning on Legion All-Star team
Chase Henning will play in the Fox River Valley American Legion All-Star game Saturday at Fox Cities Stadium in Grand Chute. Henning, an outfielder and designated hitter for Shawano’s American Legion baseball team, will join 27 other players on the National Conference team that will play the American Conference team. “He was our top hitter this year,” Shawano coach Will Gillis said.
