Teamwork focus of SCEPI summit

Mayor settles suit with SIST
A libel and defamation suit filed by Shawano Mayor Lorna Marquardt and her husband against the Samanta Roy Institute of Science and Technology (SIST) and its former chief financial officer was settled out of court after a mediation hearing this week. Marquardt and her husband, Donald, filed the suit against Kalmar Gronvall, SIST and two of its subsidiaries in 2007.

Hawks fall to New London The Shawano Community High School softball team lost 1-0 to Bay Conference foe New London on Friday. New London scored an unearned run in the first. The Hawks (7-11, 6-8 Bay) almost took the lead in the seventh when Saige Henning’s drive over the left-field fence hooked foul with Alli Raddant on base. Shelby Sommer earned the win for New London (11-5, 9-5), holding Shawano to just one hit in six innings.

Shawano girls second at Jozwiak Invitational
Seymour won both the boys and girls meets Tuesday at the Ryan Jozwiak Invitational in Shawano. Paced by two relay victories and two firsts in field events, the Shawano Community High School girls team finished second.

Packers trying to shore up defense
Pleased with the Packers’ draft, coach Mike McCarthy made a confident proclamation. Engrave it into the side of a foam cheesehead in large, green-and-gold type. “We’re going to be a better defense this year,” McCarthy said. “You can write that in big letters.” A glimpse at potential reinforcements comes Friday, when the team opens a two-day rookie minicamp.

Dorothy D. Koeller
Dorothy D. Koeller, 93, formerly of Shawano, passed away peacefully early Wednesday morning, May 14, 2014, at Lynn Health Care Center in Front Royal, Va. Dorothy had lived in Virginia for the past two years. Funeral service arrangements are pending and will be announced later. Merlyn “Bob” Carley
Merlyn “Bob” Carley, 86, Bowler, died on Tuesday, May 13, 2014, at his home. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 17, 2014, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Bowler. Gary D. Radtke
Gary D. Radtke, 76, died peacefully on Sunday, May 11, 2014, at home with his family at his side. He was born on Dec. 26, 1937, in Shawano, the son of Edward and Minnie Radtke. Gary graduated from Bonduel High School in 1955 and attended technical college for two years. On Aug. 25, 1962, he was united in marriage to Virginia Haley at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Oconto Falls.

Fundraiser benefits bullying prevention program
The nonprofit nIc Foundation will hold a fundraiser from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 23-25 at the Belle Plaine Town Hall, N3002 State Highway 22. There will be items for sale inside the Town Hall and outside in the parking lot.
