A recently retired four-star Army general will present the Memorial Day address in Shawano on Monday. Gen. Robert W. Cone, who retired in March after 35 years of service, is relocating to the Shawano area. “He retired this year and is moving up here,” said Bill Rosin, president of the Allied Veterans Council, which coordinates the city’s Memorial Day program. Cone most recently served as commander of United States Army Training Doctrine.

A Shawano police drug detail over the weekend at several city taverns netted the referral of drug charges against three people, including a felony charge against a Bowler man. Police used a confidential informant wired for sound to arrange drug transactions with patrons at four establishments. One of the cases was still under investigation. The Bonduel High School boys track and field team won its first Central Wisconsin Conference-8 championship in 26 years Saturday in Stevens Point. Hawks fall to Preble in softball The Shawano Community High School softball team squandered a 4-1 lead in a 5-4 loss to Green Bay Preble in nine innings Tuesday at Memorial Field. The Hawks (7-13, 6-9 Bay Conference) led 4-1, but Preble (18-2, 14-0 Fox River Classic Conference) tied the game in the fifth. Kaylen Krueger’s ninth-inning home run ended the game. Courtney Baumann allowed 11 hits and struck out three for Shawano.

The Shawano Community High School boys golf team hung on to third place in the Bay Conference thanks to a third-place finish in the conference meet Tuesday at Brown County Golf Course in Hobart. “It’s great; that’s what we were going for today,” Shawano coach Dean Kugler said.

Troy Springborn may have had the fastest car in the Late Model feature May 10 but had to settle for third. Saturday's race at Shawano Speedway was different as Springborn came from eighth place to take the checkered flag. Marcus Yarie and Jason Jach also picked up their first wins of the season.

CASINO EXPANSION: Veterans of Menominee Nation post the colors Monday at a groundbreaking ceremony celebrating the $8 million expansion project at Menominee Casino Resort in Keshena. The expansion will connect the casino with the convention center. The 25,000-square-foot addition will feature a gaming floor and retail center. The project should be completed by late fall.
