What would happen if I wanted to buy exactly one gallon of gasoline? How would they give me my change? My guess is they’d round it up to the next cent, right? They’re not going to round it down because they’d lose nine-tenths of a cent, right? Better that I should take a one-tenth of a cent loss than they should lose nine-tenths, right? I can’t think of any other business that deals in nine-tenths of a cent. Why do gas companies do it?

With temperatures getting into the mid-80s this week, it will feel like summer settling in on the path around the Falls. With the temperatures heating up, things on the political wire heated up at the end of last week when Gov. Walker announced that he was requesting that the state Legislature repeal the Common Core Standards. The request received a fair amount of attention in the media, and that may have been the intention.

Dawn Nelson has stepped down as varsity girls volleyball coach at Gillett Secondary School. She compiled an 82-79-4 record over seven years with the Tigers, including three straight winning seasons from 2007-09 and a share of the Marinette and Oconto Conference championship in 2009. Nelson’s best season came in her second season, in 2008, when Gillett posted a 17-5 record.

A bean dryer caught fire Monday afternoon in a livestock feed mill in Angelica, causing more than $1 million in damage and requiring the aid of 16 fire departments to put it out. Temperatures reached in excess of 300 degrees Fahrenheit while crews rotated in and out to battle the blaze at Nutrition Service Co. livestock feed mill at W249 Deer Drive, according to Pulaski Fire Chief Randy Wichlacz.

Skip Anderson, 78, of Shawano, finished his earthly journey on Sunday, July 20, 2014. Skip was born July 28, 1935, in Shawano to the late George “Pat” Anderson and Edna (Sperberg) Anderson. On Dec. 27, 1958, he was united in marriage to Sharon Jones. He served in the military from 1959 to 1961 with a stay in Germany.
