Shawano Community High School scored 28 points in the second quarter en route to a season opening 28-7 victory Friday at Lakeland Union High School in Minocqua. The Hawks and Lakeland were deadlocked until an 8-yard touchdown run by senior Chase Henning early in the second quarter.

The Bowler/Gresham high school football team needed just 9 yards and a few more seconds in a 32-28 loss Friday to Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah in Bowler. Trailing 32-28 in the final minutes, the Cats moved from their own 15-yard line to the Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah 9-yard line with five seconds left in the game. Bowler/Gresham (0-1) took a stab at throwing, but senior quarterback Thomas Kazik missed tight end Chase Nueske in the corner of the end zone,

With the month of August drawing to a close, it was time for a grandma day. They have changed greatly over the years, as the grandkids are growing up and branching out on their own. Even with the three that attend high school yet, one was working, so he couldn’t go. That made it an all girl day in Green Bay. I picked up two granddaughters in Tigerton and headed to Green Bay in a torrent of rain.

Through the course of time we’ve had many opportunities to care for God’s creatures. Not only have we raised a herd of cows, heifers and calves, but also a flock of chickens, a litter of puppies and a drove of pigs. (Yes, a group of pigs is referred to as a drove. I learn something new every day!) Along with our domesticated animals, we feed the wildlife that live adjacent to our farm. They take what they can get where they can get it.

Raising livestock for the Shawano County Fair takes months of preparation and dedication. Approximately 150 young people will display their pigs, lambs and cattle at this year’s junior livestock show and auction.

A Leopolis man who went on a weekend crime spree and evaded authorities for nearly three weeks made an initial court appearance Friday after being captured the night before. Calvin K. Ossmann, 26, was found Thursday in a town of Richmond barn where he had apparently been hiding since eluding authorities in a high-speed chase and escaping on foot Aug. 3. The Shawano County Sheriff’s Department received a call shortly after 6 p.m.

One of the NFL’s top quarterbacks learned from one of the best defensive backs in the game. With Charles Woodson leading the defense and Aaron Rodgers running the offense, the Green Bay Packers had a remarkable run of success that included a Super Bowl win and a 15-1 record the following season. The good friends will have a warm reunion Friday night when the safety returns to Lambeau Field for the first time since signing with Oakland last year.

GIRLS TENNIS Shawano second at Chilton meet Shawano finished second (20) at the Chilton Invitational on Wednesday. The Hawks’ No. 2 singles player Isebelle Carroll and No. 3 Hannah Neumann each finished in second place. No. 4 singles player Holly Schwecke won the consolation championship. The No. 3 doubles team of Nicki Ainsworth and Louisa Keenan took second place. Kewaunee (22) took first.
