Lobos rally to win Dairyland championship

The Shawano Lobos baseball team had to come from behind to win the 2014 Dairyland Grand Championship 7-6 over Hofa Park on Sunday in Hofa Park. Bryce Szymanski hit a triple and TJ Arrowood had a two-run home run to give the Lobos an early lead, but Hofa Park answered with a pair of doubles and a home run by Adam Frost in the bottom of the first frame. 4-H has been part of Borre’s life since childhood
Ellie Borre, of Navarino, has been involved in 4-H as a member and leader, and is now on the family living key committee. “I grew up in Outagamie County 4-H,” Borre said. “I felt it was enjoyable and worthwhile.” She was a member of the Woodland Hustlers 4-H Club and took clothing, food, and home furnishings. She married and moved to the Navarino area, where she raised three daughters who were in the Navarino Go-Fors 4-H Club.

GIRLS GOLF Hawks sixth at Crystal Springs Julia Beck tied for ninth with a 52 as Shawano finished sixth at a Bay Conference meet Tuesday at Crystal Spring Golf Course in Seymour. Brianna Zook carded a 54, Emily Smith and Gabby Krueger each shot 64 and Sydney Schrieber finished with a 67. Marinette and Denmark tied for first at 197.

No injuries in fire at Kersten Lumber
Authorities responded to a fire at Kersten Lumber in Birnamwood on Sunday night. The Shawano County Sheriff’s Department said an alarm system alerted authorities to the fire in the back of a building at the lumber yard, 295 U.S. Highway 45, at 9:45 pm. Authorities said an electrical issue led to the fire. There were no reports of injuries. No damage estimate was available Monday morning.

Tigerton 5, Aniwa 0 Eric Kroening’s seventh-inning, two-run home run capped Tigerton’s 5-1 win over Aniwa to advance to the Badger Amateur Baseball Association’s Grand Championship game, which will be played against Plover on Sunday in Tigerton. Kroening was 2 for 4 with a double, a home run and two RBIs. Paul Sellner earned the win on the mound and had triple.

VanStraten gets 8th win at speedway
The second-to-last night of the 2014 racing season saw five drivers make return trips to victory lane Saturday at the Shawano Speedway. Nick Anvelink, who started in 10th place, won his fifth Late Model feature, and Travis VanStraten secured win number eight in IMCA Stock Car action. It was VanStraten’s fourth consecutive victory. Matt Oreskovich scored his second IMCA Modified win, and Jason Jach earned his second IMCA Sport Mod feature.

Missing elderly Tigerton man found alive and well
An elderly Tigerton man who went missing Sunday night was found alive and well Monday afternoon in a wooded area in the town of Morris. The Shawano County Sheriff’s Department received a call shortly before 8:30 p.m. Sunday that an 89-year-old man had left his residence in Tigerton about 6:30 p.m.

The members of the Pella Fire and Rescue Department are dedicated to helping the people of the Township of Pella. Jerry Weatherwax has been with the department for 22 years, the last six as fire chief. “I enjoy the part of helping people out,” said Weatherwax, who also spent 10 years on the Embarrass Fire Department.

Volunteer Profile
Gini Reineke has volunteered at the Shawano County Historical Society for seven years. She was born in Fort Wayne, Indiana, the daughter in a military family that traveled extensively. Reineke graduated from Beaver Dam High School, and then earned a degree in history from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.
