Antigo’s Dylan Waldvogel started seventh and finished first in the 20-lap IMCA modifieds feature race at the Shawano Speedway on May 30.

Clintonville’s Lucas Lambries was second, and Wausau’s Marcus Yarie was third. Polesitter Jason Yeager, of Shawano, did not start.

Yarie and Wausau’s Kevin Feck won the heat races.

Three Shawano singles players and a doubles team made it to the Division 2 sectional round, and of those players advanced to the state tournament.

Number 1 singles player Enrique Omella Valls beat Chase Almlie of Osceola 6-1, 6-1, but then lost 6-3, 6-4 to Tegan Schott of Aquinas. However, the first round win qualified him for state, the third Shawano state qualifier in four years. He also beat an Ashland player to finish third.

Wittenberg-Birnamwood 14, Nekoosa 4

Wittenberg-Birnamwood erupted for 14 runs in the Division 3 regional title game and advanced to sectional play.

Rory Salvesen hit 4-for-5 with a double, three RBIs and two run scored.

Kendall Lex hit 3-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Kennedy Benbo was also 3-for-4 with three runs scored.

Lena 13, Bowler 5

Action in the Division 4 regional opened with No. 6 Lena topping No. 11 Bowler.

Pulaski 7, Menasha 3

Trailing 3-2 after five innings, Pulaski exploded for five runs in the sixth inning to claim the win in the opening round of its Division 1 regional.

Pulaski 2, Manitowoc Lincoln 0

Sophomore Tatum Wentland had a pair of saves in Pulaski’s 2-0 shutout over Manitowoc Lincoln.

The Red Raiders improved to 8-5-5, and the Ships sank to 8-9-3.

Traffic headaches got a little more inconvenient on state Highway 29 on May 29 when a semi-tractor trailer caught fire on the highway near the exit to state Highway 22.

According to Lt. Chris Madle with the Shawano County Sheriff’s Department, the semi was traveling westbound on Highway 29 hauling wood chips when one of the tires caught fire. The fire then spread to the rest of the vehicle.

Gov. Tony Evers paid a visit to the Suring School District to check out the impressive work teachers and staff are doing with younger and older students alike, even as he feels the sting from the defeat a bipartisan bill he negotiated with Republican leaders in the Wisconsin Legislature. That bill would have, among other things, helped reimburse schools for special education expenses.

Shawano’s school resource officers are going to be out and about in the community and beyond as they continue to try to foster good relations between residents and law enforcement.

Shawano County elected officials gave a tentative thumbs-up to adding to its workforce in 2027, and the best part for local taxpayers is that most of them won’t result in a higher tax levy.
