A dog heard barking in a foreclosed home led Shawano police to a gruesome find Wednesday when they discovered numerous dead and abandoned animals inside. Authorities required hazardous materials suits and breathing apparatuses to enter and clear out the house at 817 E. Maurer St.

Lovers of Shawano County’s barn quilts will be able to get their fill and more with a new book that came out last week. The book, put together by Jim Leuenberger, barn quilt project coordinator, features the first 222 barn quilts, started in 2010.

Playing high school football with only 16 players would be a challenge in regular circumstances, say playing in the Central Wisconsin Conference-10. But Bowler/Gresham switched to 8-man football this year, where fielding 16 players is just about right. “We’ll be playing a lot of schools that are in the same situation that we’re in,” Bowler/Gresham co-head coach Ralph Smith said.

Evelyn M. Kunschke, 71, of Shawano, passed away suddenly Monday evening, Aug. 12, 2013, in Shawano following a courageous battle with cancer. Bonduel 10, Shawano 9 The Shawano Lobos’ season came to an end Sunday afternoon with a loss to Bonduel in the first round of the Dairyland League playoffs. The Lobos trailed 5-0, but rallied to take a 6-5 lead in the bottom of the second inning.

Victor W. “Vic” Ziemer, 86, of Shawano, passed away peacefully on Tuesday morning, Aug. 13, 2013, at Evergreen Care Center in Shawano. Stephanie A. Becker, 59, of Shawano, passed away Sunday, Aug. 11, 2013, in Appleton. Born on Aug. 31, 1953, in North Dakota, she was the daughter of the late Leon and Carol (Hustad) Becker. She grew up with her family in Des Lacs, N.D., and graduated from Des Lacs High School in 1971. She also lived in Glenwood Springs, Colo. On Feb. 4, 1989, she was united in marriage to Neil Van Rossum in Green Bay.

Eastern Division Neopit 8, Gresham 7 Gresham jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first inning against Alex Peters, but Will Corn came on to throttle Gresham the rest of the way. Corn earned the win. A Pulaski man has been charged with his 11th drunken driving offense after being arrested Saturday in Cecil. Terrance L. Manthei, 47, could face a maximum possible penalty of 12½ years in prison and a $25,000 fine. State statutes also mandate a minimum sentence of four years if convicted.
