Nature up close and personal

People usually can’t get up close to a black bear, a bobcat or even a deer. A new life-sized diorama unveiled recently at the Navarino Nature Center will help create a more personal experience for nature lovers, especially the school groups that visit. “We wanted to redo the classroom, and we wanted to make it a little more visually appealing,” nature center employee Julie Wilber said. Bonduel 10, Shawano 9 The Shawano Lobos’ season came to an end Sunday afternoon with a loss to Bonduel in the first round of the Dairyland League playoffs. The Lobos trailed 5-0, but rallied to take a 6-5 lead in the bottom of the second inning.

Stephanie A. Becker
Stephanie A. Becker, 59, of Shawano, passed away Sunday, Aug. 11, 2013, in Appleton. Born on Aug. 31, 1953, in North Dakota, she was the daughter of the late Leon and Carol (Hustad) Becker. She grew up with her family in Des Lacs, N.D., and graduated from Des Lacs High School in 1971. She also lived in Glenwood Springs, Colo. On Feb. 4, 1989, she was united in marriage to Neil Van Rossum in Green Bay.

Pulaski man charged with 11th OWI offense
A Pulaski man has been charged with his 11th drunken driving offense after being arrested Saturday in Cecil. Terrance L. Manthei, 47, could face a maximum possible penalty of 12½ years in prison and a $25,000 fine. State statutes also mandate a minimum sentence of four years if convicted. Shawano County sheriff’s deputies responding to a reckless driving complaint on state Highway 22 shortly before 2 a.m.

Three injured in motorcycle crashes over the weekend
Two motorcycle accidents in Shawano County that seriously injured three people over the weekend were still under investigation Tuesday, according to the Shawano County Sheriff’s Department. The first accident took place just before 6:30 p.m. Friday at the intersection of U.S. Highway 45 at state Highway 52 in the town of Aniwa.

County park help request trimmed
Shawano County Parks Manager Keith Marquardt’s request for more park staff during the fall months was trimmed Monday by the Administrative Committee. Marquardt had requested one of his summer employee positions be expanded to nine months because of the number of events and campers at Shawano Lake County Park in September and October.

Consultant may review budget
Spending $500 on a professional to look at Shawano School District’s budget could either yield new ways to save money or confirm that district officials are being fiscally responsible.
