The fastest snowmobiles in the U.S. will reach record speeds in Oconto Falls this week, as the World Series of Ice Drags returns for a third year in a row. This time, the sleds will look even faster, according to local racer Tim Magnin, because they’ll be screaming past at over 100 mph in the dark. For the first time in Oconto Falls, the International Snowmobile Racing’s event will include races under the lights.

Their arguments varied, but Oconto County employees interviewed by the Personnel and Wages Committee on Friday had one thing in common — a desire for better compensation. County employees dissatisfied with their position on a pay scale adopted by the County Board in November presented appeals to the committee on Friday.

A proposed land give-away intended to stimulate residential growth in the city of Gillett was put on hold Thursday by the City Council. A plan to sell residential lots in the Ridgewood Heights Subdivision for $1 was referred back to the Planning Committee. The committee drafted an agreement with Northern Homes Development LLC, of Gillett, that would allow the developer to purchase the six lots in the subdivision for $1 apiece.

A firefighter with nearly 20 years of experience has been elected as fire chief for the city of Gillett. Greg Rudie was elected in January by members of the Gillett Fire Department. “I’m looking forward to serving the city in that capacity,” he said. “He’s been fire chief before, and I think he’ll do a good job,” Mayor Irene Drake said. Rudie replaces Tom Wolfgram, who expressed interest in retiring as chief.

Neighbor-to-neighbor connections are keeping the water flowing for several Gillett residents. When water mains buried under city streets began to freeze due to an extended cold snap, Gillett Utility began linking homes with insulated hoses, burying the hoses under the snow and feeding water from one home to another. Clintonville water customers are being told to keep a tap running to keep water lines from freezing up. James F. (“Lee” or “Skip”) Keller, 82, born Francis Allie Keller, of Greendale, passed away Sunday, Jan. 19, 2014, surrounded by family, at St. Francis Hospital in Milwaukee. He was born on June 15, 1931, to the late Harry and Ardell (Couillard) Keller, of Marion, into a hardworking farm family. He graduated from Marion High School in 1949.
