A convicted sex offender who was deported to Mexico in February is facing a felony charge in Shawano County of failing to inform the state Sex Offender Registry of his new whereabouts. Antonio S. Marquina, 41, was convicted of second-degree sexual assault of a child in Shawano County in 2007 and sentenced to prison.

A paper written by a second-grade student from Hillcrest Primary School is advancing to a national PTA writing contest. Baelyan Putz won the grand prize in the Wisconsin State PTA Reflections program for his essay about being an artist. Three other Hillcrest students, all in second grade, also placed in the contest. Aidan Burr won the outstanding interpretation honor for his essay about flying chipmunk gear.

Wolf River Lutheran High School, a small parochial school in Cecil, is considering building a new $1.3 million school in Shawano. The proposed 18,000 square-foot building would consist of five classrooms, a gymnasium with two locker rooms, office space and other basic needs. The school has hired Cornerstone Stewardship Ministry, based in Madison, to conduct a survey to determine the level of support that such a capital undertaking would have.

When a moving truck from Madison pulled into Bowler School in early March, the sound of the school’s music program would be forever changed. Barbara Agnes Hollrith, 82, of Shawano, passed away Thursday, March 13, 2014, at Shawano Medical Center following a stroke. Born on June 20, 1931, she was the daughter of the late John and Laura (Jonas) Hueller. On March 31, 1951, she married Marvin Hollrith in Milwaukee. He preceded her in death on Feb. 19, 2002.
