12 apply for police chief job

Twelve people have submitted applications to the city to replace Shawano Police Chief Ed Whealon after he retires in two weeks. Whealon will leave the job on April 4 after more than 34 years with the department and 12 years as chief. Friday was the last day for those interested in the job to submit their names. Water main repairs could become legal issue
The bill hasn’t come in yet for the cost of repairing a water-main break that cut off water to numerous businesses along East Green Bay Street last week, but when it does there could be a dispute over who should pay it. Shawano Lake District Sanitary District Administrator Jerry Weisnicht said the break was caused by a leak in a private fire protection line belonging to a Green Bay Street business. Return to state on minds of Bowler/Gresham trio
A trip back to the WIAA state track meet is the goal for three Gresham/Bowler athletes. Juniors Cody Montez and Drew Payne each qualified for state in individual events last year, while Payne and senior Austin Olsen qualified as part of the 4x100-meter relay team. Montez finished 14th in the 3,200-meter run at last year’s state meet after spending the season chasing the program’s record time of 10:07.00.

Shirley Mae Sperberg
Shirley Mae Sperberg, 81, of the town of Richmond, passed away Thursday, March 20, 2014, at Kindred Hearts in Shawano. Born on Aug. 8, 1932 in Red River, she was the daughter of the late William and Aurelia (Cotter) Zastrow. On Aug. 27, 1949, she was united in marriage to Lawrence A. Sperberg in Bonduel. He preceded her in death on Nov. 27, 1980.

School Notes
St. James Lutheran School The sixth-grade earth science class is just completing a study of volcanoes. During the unit the students had to build a model volcano that could actually erupt. There were many concoctions and mixtures thought up to demonstrate a volcanic eruption, including smoke bombs, Mentos and Coke, and baking soda with vinegar. We even had a student build a wide and gently sloping shield volcano like the state of Hawaii.

Olga Brener joins Fuel Up to Play 60
Olga Brener Intermediate School in Shawano is participating in a nationwide wellness initiative. Fuel Up to Play 60 is rallying schools and communities across the U.S. to support school wellness initiatives, good nutrition and physical activity, which help educate students and curb obesity. Book hits a home run with children
A Wisconsin author has written a book that she hopes will be a home run with children. Teen faces multiple vehicle theft charges
A Keshena teen is facing multiple charges of auto theft and attempted auto theft for being part of an alleged joyriding spree with a group of juveniles in December. Kyle J. Peters, 18, is accused of stealing a vehicle in the town of Lessor, the attempted theft of a vehicle in the town of Richmond and being party to the crime of stealing a vehicle, also in Richmond.
