Hillside participating in Back to Church Sunday

Hillside Assembly of God will join thousands of churches nationwide Sept. 21 in celebrating Back to Church Sunday.

Hillside, 5890 State Highway 22, Gillett, will mark the event with a special service, including a children’s program on the lower level, followed by a time of fellowship with desserts.

More than $407K awarded through grants

The Greater Green Bay Community Foundation, along with its fundholders, awarded a record $407,655 during the summer cycle of its Funds for Greater Green Bay grants program.

The awards support the work of 40 nonprofit organizations in Brown, Kewaunee, and Oconto counties working across a diverse range of causes — from the arts to community improvement, health, education, the environment and more.

Tiny houses proposed to curtail homelessness in Shawano

Another suggestion has been made regarding how to combat homelessness in Shawano, and it’s a tiny one.

Two Shawano residents who have been advocating for the homeless in the community brought the idea of tiny homes to the Shawano Common Council on Sept. 10. They noted that it’s helping to combat the situation in cities like Oshkosh and Chippewa Falls.

Bowman arson case still has no resolution

A resolution in the case against Amanda Bowman, a Bowler woman who stands accused of arson, attempted first-degree intentional homicide and six counts of felony bail jumping, remains elusive as Bowman’s attorney asked for another continuance Sept. 10.

City of Shawano wants to dump plans to close landfill

An opportunity to make some extra cash has spurred city of Shawano officials to ask Shawano County to hold off on their joint plan to close the Shawano Landfill on Dec. 31.

County officials appear to be OK with the request, with a few caveats.

Shawano County Executive Committee members discussed a proposed memorandum of understanding Sept. 3. The landfill is currently the responsibility of the city and the county.

Shawano County officials consider employee leave of absence policy

Employees have had their jobs protected under FMLA (Family and Medical Leave Act) rules for more than 30 years, but not everyone qualifies.

Such is the case with some Shawano County employees, and the county’s human resources director wants to change that.
