Almost 1 in 4 K-3 students on reading plans

Almost one in four students in kindergarten through third grade at Shawano public schools are considered to be at-risk for meeting reading standards and are required to having a reading plan this fall, according to data announced Nov. 10 to the Shawano School District Student Success and Relationships Committee.

The Wittenberg-based casino, hotel and entertainment center started handing out free to-go meals at its River’s Edge Restaurant on Nov. 4. The meals ended Nov. 7 after SNAP benefits were reinstated that day for thousands of Wisconsin residents.

Committee wrangles over ethics accusations

Accusations of ethical misconduct continue to fly through the corridors of the Shawano County Courthouse.

The Nov. 4 hearing of the ethics committee involved former administrative coordinator Jim Davel accusing Supervisor Lowel Hammett of a trio of violations.

While most meetings of the committee occur behind closed doors, Hammett made no such request, and the meeting was held in open session.

Veterans speak of service at Pulaski Museum panel

The Pulaski Area Historical Society gathered veterans from modern conflicts all the way back to World War II and gave them an opportunity to tell folks about their service during a panel discussion at the local museum Nov. 8 to commemorate Veterans Day.

2 men die in single-vehicle crash

Two men died as the result of a single-vehicle crash and a third was taken to a local hospital for non-life threatening injuries, according to a statement from the Shawano County Sheriff’s Department.

According to the news release, at about 11:55 p.m. Nov. 8, authorities received a report of a crash on County Road BB near Nauman Road in the Town of Green Valley.
