City wrapping up major street construction

Asphalt repairs on Fifth Street are lingering, but, for the most part, major street reconstruction in Shawano has wrapped up for the year and has come in within budget, according to the Department of Public Works. “We’re very happy with the results,” Public Works Coordinator Eddie Sheppard said. The Shawano Common Council in March awarded this year’s street and utility reconstruction projects to DeGroot Inc., of Green Bay, on a bid of $966,975. S

Arlene M. Anderson
Arlene M. Anderson, 82, of Shawano, passed away peacefully on Thursday morning, July 17, 2014, at Birch Hill Care Center in Shawano. Arlene had been at Birch Hill rehabilitating from a recent injury. Holsey takes over Chargers football program
Leonard Holsey has been hired to coach the Wittenberg-Birnamwood High School varsity football team this season, moving up after spending a season as an assistant coach under former coach Aaron Doll. Holsey, a Duke University graduate, played in the NFL for the New York Giants, Indianapolis Colts, New England Patriots and Washington Redskins.

Behnke honored by Conservation Congress
Herb Behnke, a Shawano County conservation activist who died in December, is getting one more accolade for his lifetime of working on issues that impacted Wisconsin’s hunters and fishermen. The Wisconsin Conservation Congress recently presented Herb’s wife, Lenore Behnke, a certificate recognizing his contribution to the congress and the state. About a year ago, Kent and Vickie Mikkelson purchased a neat old house with a beautiful big front porch at 81 Waupaca St. in Clintonville. They had been looking for a fixer-upper as an investment opportunity. It was only after the purchase that they learned the home had important historical significance.

Arson A Tigerton man is facing two felony counts of arson for allegedly setting fire to deer stands on his father’s property over the weekend. Donald R. Johnson, 53, was arrested in the town of Germania on Saturday after Shawano County sheriff’s deputies responded to a disturbance call at the property. According to the criminal complaint, one of the stands was still burning when authorities arrived and Johnson was found standing nearby.

Program emphasizes value of exercise for seniors
Physical fitness will be the focus of Thursday’s eighth annual Senior Information Day at the Shawano Civic Center. The program, “Healthy Inside-Out,” starts with a continental breakfast at 8:30 a.m. and features four speakers who will discuss the importance of exercise. Lunch will also be served. Senior Information Day is a collaboration between the Shawano County Social Services’ Aging Unit and Shawano Community Education.

Residents question proposed schools budget
Nearly two dozen residents attended Shawano School District’s second public information meeting on the 2014-15 budget Wednesday morning at the Shawano Civic Center. The 2014-15 budget plan recommends a $13.5 million tax levy, the maximum the district would be allowed to tax and about $600,000 more than this year’s levy of $12.9 million.
