A fair-weather fan of fair weather

Short, intense spawning season forecast
Local residents could have small window of opportunity to watch the sturgeon spawning at the Shawano dam this year, according to the state Department of Natural Resources. DNR sturgeon biologist Ryan Koenigs said spawning began Thursday in locations around New London and Shiocton, including Sturgeon Trail Park and Bamboo Bend. Parents speak against start time proposal
A public forum regarding school start times in the Shawano School District was sparsely attended Thursday, but many of the dozen people present made it clear that the committee recommendation to push the times back 30 minutes for all schools was not palatable. Under the ad-hoc committee recommendation, school would start at 8 a.m., instead of 7:30 a.m., for high school and middle school students. The elementary schools would start at 8:45 a.m.

‘M*A*S*H’ staging surgical strike on Shawano
The Box in the Wood Theatre Guild has had its fair share of sell-out shows over the years, but it is hard to remember the last time the guild had its first show almost sold out before the auditions were even held. However, it looks like tickets for opening night of the spring play, “M*A*S*H,” are going to be hard to come by, unless you’re a veteran.

Statewide tornado drill is today
The National Weather Service says all Wisconsin offices are a “go” for Thursday’s statewide tornado drill. At 1 p.m., the National Weather Service will issue a statewide test tornado watch and at 1:45 p.m. a statewide test tornado warning. The drill ends at 2 p.m. There is no risk of severe weather in the state on Thursday with only a chance of scattered showers for southeastern Wisconsin.

Grassroots votes can help shape outdoors regulations
Nearly 80 sportsmen and outdoors enthusiasts from the Shawano area proved their passion for fish and wildlife Monday night by voting on 114 issues that could ultimately affect hunting, fishing and trapping regulations. Hawks sweep Rhinelander in marathon doubleheader
Playing a doubleheader can be an endurance test for any team on the baseball diamond. But on Saturday, the Shawano and Rhinelander high school squads played the equivalent of nearly three games, with Shawano sweeping the twin bill, 4-3 in eight innings and 1-0 in 11 innings. Senior pitcher Jack Lacy notched both victories in relief.
