George Joseph Vellella, 84, of Shawano, passed away on Friday, April 10, 2015, at the Shawano Medical Center while surrounded by his loving family. He was born on April 4, 1931, in Cleveland, Ohio, the son of the late George and Vicenza “Jennie” (Asta) Vellella. George was a loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather who served as a wonderful role model and support to his six boys.

While the Wolf River is nearly warm enough, sturgeon had not yet started to spawn Tuesday at the Shawano dam, according to the state Department of Natural Resources. Despite social media whispers that sturgeon have arrived, DNR fisheries biologist Ryan Koenigs said social media whispers regarding the sturgeon reaching Shawano were misleading. “The sturgeon are not spawning at the Shawano dam yet, at least to my knowledge,” Koenigs said.

Five area volunteers were honored Tuesday night at the sixth annual Celebration of Giving awards at the Gathering.
