Shawano Community High School’s athletic programs might not be bringing home too many state trophies, but there’s plenty for them to be proud of, according to a report presented Aug. 12 to the Shawano School Board. Out of 752 enrolled students in the last school year, 339 of them were involved with one or more programs, which is about 45.1% of the entire student body, with 105 playing in two sports and 65 playing in three.

A Keshena man was sentenced Aug. 12 to two years in prison for the aggravated assault of his live-in girlfriend. Arrelio R. Escalante, 37, faced an advisory guideline sentence of 30-37 months in prison after pleading guilty in May to assault by strangulation. According to the plea agreement, the girlfriend, identified in court documents as “Jane Doe” and “SRM,” called Menominee Tribal Police on Feb.

Greg Parker, district attorney for Shawano and Menominee counties, held off a challenge by former Assistant District Attorney Alec Ballo in the Aug. 13 Republican primary. Parker topped Ballo 4,312 to 1,911 in the vote total, sweeping the entire city of Shawano. Parker lost by two votes in the Town of Bartelme and in the city of Marion. Parker won the rest of the municipalities in Shawano County. 6th Assembly District Republican Rep.

In the 4th Assembly District, state Rep. David Steffen, R-Howard, defeated Darwin Behnke in the Republican primary Aug. 13, while Jane Benson outpolled Alexia Unertl on the Democratic side. The districtwide unofficial numbers showed Steffen with 6,098 votes to Behnke’s 3,043, while Benson had 3,515 votes and Unertl 958. There were Republican primaries in two of the other three districts that include parts of Oconto County. State Rep.

Oconto County residents have the opportunity to bring a sample of their well water and have the nitrate quantity analyzed free of charge during this year’s county fair. The well water nitrate testing is being provided by the University of Wisconsin-Madison Division of Extension and will be conducted by Scott Reuss, regional crops/soils educator. Reuss will be on hand at the Oconto County Youth Fair in Gillett on Aug.
