Mom on a mission

Amy Hanten is on a mission, and that mission is to get people back to the dinner table. She plans to stop at nothing to make that happen, and she’ll use every tool in her arsenal to do that — salads, turkey taco bakes, even green and gold trifles to entice Green Bay Packers fans. “We didn’t have any money (growing up), and when we did, there were not a lot of restaurants,” Hanten said during an appearance Thursday night at the Shawano-City County

County plans events for Emergency Preparedness Month
Emergency management and public health officials from Shawano and Menominee counties are planning two community outreach events as part of September’s Emergency Preparedness Month. Officials will be at Hanke’s Sentry Foods, 110 S. Mission St., in Wittenberg from 1o:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Thursday. On Sept. 21, they will be at Qualheim’s True Value, 1345 E.

County land acquisition policy on back burner
Plans to develop a county policy for land acquisition funds are on hold, with the current budget crunch to blame. The Shawano County Capital Improvement Projects Committee on Thursday briefly discussed whether it would be prudent for the county to start setting aside funds for future land purchases. Shawano considers changes to TIF district plans
Shawano officials are exploring ways they could use some of the revenue from the city’s Tax Incremental Finance (TIF) districts to give an additional boost to economic development in those areas. TIF districts are areas where municipalities invest in infrastructure, such as sewer and water, to attract development where it might not otherwise occur, or to make improvements, such as eliminating blight. Bonduel loses in 5
The Bonduel High School volleyball team overcame a slow start Thursday to push Weyauwega-Fremont to five games, but fell in the final, 15-9. The Bears dropped the first two games, 25-15, 25-13, before putting things together. “It kind of seems this season, I don’t know what it is, but they’re asleep that first game,” Bonduel coach Kim Bodoh said. “It kind of takes them some time to build up that momentum.

Hawks' Bergner hoping to build on catch
The ending to Shawano Community High School’s football game Friday, a 32-26 Hawks victory in New London, was a great moment for the team, especially for senior Brice Bergner, who hauled in quarterback Cole Huntington’s pass and ran it 43 yards for the winning touchdown. “I’ve been working really hard all season. And I felt like, in that moment, it all paid off,” Bergner said. “That’s something I’ve dreamed about since I was a little kid.

'Team 93' establishing a tone of its own
It wasn’t a smart play. The result wasn’t good for the Packers. Still, when Green Bay Packers linebacker Clay Matthews dove onto San Francisco quarterback Colin Kaepernick out of bounds in Sunday’s loss, it reflected something deeper about “Team 93,” as this, the 93rd team in Packers’ history, has started to call itself. Matthews took Kaepernick to the ground and was rightly flagged.

Keys to the Game: Redskins at Packers
GREEN BAY PACKERS Strike first, often The Green Bay Packers went three-and-out on their first drive Sunday against the San Francisco 49ers. They did it again to start the second half. The team was able to keep itself in the game with a few quick-strike drives, but that isn’t as good as establishing dominance right away. The Packers need to start quicker.
