The Community Blood Center has urged all eligible donors to schedule a donation as soon as possible after nearly a month of critical need for multiple blood types.
Type O negative and positive blood remain critically low as many trauma patients continue to rely on the blood type, including a new mother experiencing childbirth complications and a patient hurt in an ATV crash.
In addition, Type A negative has been critically low for more than a week after multiple emergencies at local hospitals in Appleton, Green Bay and Iron Mountain. Now, Type A positive is also in critical need following a massive transfusion protocol during an emergency recently.
While the need for blood is constant, the current situation is unique in its duration and number of blood types affected at the same time.
“Even every day accidents can lead to an unexpected blood transfusion. Recently, a serious fall led to internal injuries and an emergency trip to the hospital that required nearly 90 units of blood,” said John Hagins, president and CEO, The Community Blood Center. “Schedule a donation as soon as possible to ensure local hospitals have all blood types available for everyday treatments and unexpected emergencies. Whether you’re a regular donor or considering starting your lifesaving journey, now is the time to make an impact.”
While Type A and Type O blood are in critical need, all blood types are essential. Every donation strengthens the supply, ensuring patients have the blood they need for routine surgeries, cancer treatments, childbirth complications and life-threatening emergencies. Appointments can be booked by visiting www.communityblood.org, using the CBC donor app or calling 800-280-4102.
