Paul and Jane Krause help at the Shawano Area Food Pantry and Resource Center and at their church, Hope Community, whenever they can.
Paul is from Howard in Brown County and graduated from Pulaski High School. He worked in manufacturing for eight years, then was a meter reader for 34 years for Wisconsin Public Service. He retired in 2003.
Jane is from Green Bay, graduating from Green Bay West High School. She worked in the office at Wisconsin Public Service for nine years, then stayed home with their four children.
Paul and Jane have been married 41 years and now have five grandchildren. They live in the town of Richmond on an 80-acre farm, where they raise Holstein steers and hogs.
Q Where do you and Jane volunteer?
A “We volunteer at the Shawano Area Food Pantry and Resource Center. We used to volunteer for Meals on Wheels in Brown County. We’ve been in Shawano for six years and doing it for five years.”
Q How do you help?
A “We drive the van and pick up food at the drop site (Shawano Area Food Center). Before that, we went to Omro to Feeding America. In the winter, we go once a month, and in the summer, we job-share with another couple. The produce is in a cooler and we go through and pick what we feel SAFPARC could use. We are the determinators as to what to bring back. Once in a while, we get a palette of meat. The stuff is packed in the van, box by box. We leave home at 7:30 a.m. to pick up the van. It takes us 45 minutes to load and weigh it. Everything that goes to SAFPARC is weighed. We unload it and have help of one or two people. It gets packed away in the freezer or cooler.”
Q Why do you volunteer?
A “It’s something we can do to give back. The Lord has been so good to us and blessed us so richly that we feel we want to give back to the community. I don’t ever think about it anymore. It’s just part of our routine. It’s fun and the people we deal with are very nice.”
Q How did you get started?
A “We heard about SAFPARC and the good work that they’re doing. We wanted to be a part of it.”
