Jean Hinkfuss volunteers at the Lutheran Counseling and Family Services Thrift Store at 2324 E. Richmond St., Shawano.
The store accepts donations of clothing, household goods, books, knickknacks, jewelry and furniture. Hinkfuss is in charge of lingerie and purses.
She was born in the town of Center and grew up in Black Creek. After graduating from Fox Valley Lutheran High School, she worked at AAL, now Thrivent Financial, for six years. Jean also worked at the former Carol’s Diner in Bonduel for two years.
Jean and her husband, Ron, farmed and now cash crop in the town of Angelica. They have been married 47 years and have six children, seven grandchildren and one deceased grandchild. They are members of a dartball league and the Bonduel FFA Alumni, for which Jean has been the treasurer and secretary and still helps with various activities.
At Zion Lutheran Church in Zachow, she is the secretary and inside janitor. She also makes quilts for Lutheran World Relief.
Q How long have you been volunteering at LCFS?
A “It’s been a long time. Maybe 17 years. I was at the other store.” (LCFS used to be on Main Street.)
Q How did you get started?
A “Somebody from my church, Zion Lutheran in Zachow, was working here and she asked me to help. She got sick and couldn’t work and I became department head.”
Q What do you do?
A “Mostly I run the cash register. I straighten clothes and put things out for my department.”
Q How often do you work?
A “Usually once a month, but then we get extra days if there are five weeks in a month.”
Q Where else do you volunteer?
A “I crochet baby hats for the hospital. A lady from the hospital auxiliary was in the store and talking about crocheting. I’ve been doing it for two years and a lot of times I pick up the yarn here. In the last two years I’ve probably made around 100 hats. Some are bigger and some are smaller. I used to volunteer at the Bethesda Thrift Shop in Green Bay.”
Q Why do you volunteer?
A “I just like doing it. It’s interesting and you meet a lot of people.”
The LCFS store is open from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. The store is closed on Sunday. For more information, call 715-526-9092. Please call ahead when donating any large items.
