The Suring High School boys basketball team fell behind early and couldn’t catch up to Bonduel in a 62-50 nonconference loss Friday in Bonduel.
The Eagles (3-5, 1-4 Marinette & Oconto Conference) fell behind 17-8 in the first quarter, despite facing a Bonduel team that had given up 63 and 71 points in two previous losses.
“We’ve been struggling a little bit lately,” Bonduel coach Duke Copp said. “We wanted to be more intense and play harder on defense. I thought we did a really good job in the first half.”
Suring would slow the Bears’ scoring in the second half, outscoring Bonduel 28-25, but was unable to put a significant dent in the Bears’ lead.
Tyler Fisher, a 6-foot-4 senior forward, scored 18 points to lead Suring. John Horst, a 5-11 senior, had 10 points and Creo VanBellinger added nine for the Eagles.
Zach Zernicke, a 6-4 senior, scored a season-high 21 points for Bonduel (5-6, 1-3 Central Wisconsin Conference-8) and Hunter VanderLinden added 11.
The Bears also got a burst from Hunter Berry coming off the bench to score a couple of baskets in the second quarter.
“Hunter Berry I thought came off the bench and played a really good game,” Copp said. “He gives us a spark. Little guy, 5-5, never gets a call, but he plays like crazy.”
After opening the season 3-1, the Eagles have dropped four straight games. Suring can end the skid Friday when it travels to Lena (1-8, 0-4 M&O) for a conference game.
