Gresham boys win tournament opener
The Gresham Community School boys basketball team outscored Oneida Nation in each of the first three quarters en route to a 53-42 win Friday on the opening day of the Gresham Holiday Tournament.
Christian Haffner and Killian Eggert led Gresham (6-1, 4-1 Central Wisconsin Conference-10) with 13 points each. Eggert also had five assists. James Kazik added nine points.
Isaiah Charles and Mitchell Cornelius each had 11 for Oneida Nation (4-3).
In other boys varsity tourney action, Gibraltar (4-7, 1-5 Packerland Conference) defeated Menominee Indian (2-5, 2-3 Central Wisconsin Conference-10) 66-44.
In the junior varsity boys tournament, Gresham defeated Oneida Nation 28-14, Gibraltar defeated Menominee Indian 64-27, and Gresham stopped Wolf River Lutheran 28-14.
The tourney resumes at 8:30 a.m. Saturday. The varsity girls and boys championship games are scheduled for 6:30 and 8:30 p.m., respectively, although the tourney Friday ran well ahead of schedule.

Big third quarter gives Chargers win
The Wittenberg-Birnamwood High School boys basketball team overcame a first-half deficit to post a 45-36 win Friday in Rosholt.
A 15-5 scoring edge in the third quarter was the difference in the game. Brant Linke sparked the Chargers in the period with a couple of 3-pointers.
“We really came out sluggish in the first half, but I was happy with how the guys responded to our halftime adjustments,” Wittenberg-Birnamwood coach Lon Ebel said. “We played an excellent third quarter and executed much better offensively.”
Wittenberg-Birnamwood (4-5, 1-3 Central Wisconsin Conference-8) recorded 13 steals and took advantage of 18 Rosholt turnovers.
Nick Kapitz led the Chargers with 21 points. He hit eight of 12 field goal attempts, including two-of-two 3-pointers.
“Nick Kapitz had a nice game on the offensive end of the floor and created several turnovers defensively,” Ebel said. “Aaron Monnot also played a good game on both ends and is becoming a defensive stopper for us.”
Jarod Richter had 13 points for Rosholt (1-6, 1-4 Central Wisconsin Conference-10).

Richland Center handles Shawano
Richland Center defeated Shawano 47-32 Friday at the Baraboo Tournament.

Coleman clobbers Menominee Indian
Menominee Indian was no match for Coleman in high school girls basketball action Friday.
Menominee Indian trailed 16-10 after the first quarter but managed no more than five points in each of the remaining periods in the 65-22 loss at the Gresham Holiday Tournament. Coleman led 28-14 at the half and never let up in the second half, outscoring the Eagles 37-8 in the final two periods.
Makenzie Sadowski led Coleman (2-3, 2-1 Marinette & Oconto Conference) with 21 points.
Menominee Indian (2-3, 2-2 Central Wisconsin Conference-10) statistics were not available at the Leader’s press time.
In other varsity girls tourney action, Oneida Nation defeated Gresham 57-19, and Coleman defeated Menominee Indian 65-22.
In the junior varsity girls tournament, Bowler defeated Wolf River Lutheran 37-9 and Coleman defeated Menominee Indian 33-9.

Tigerton falls to Iola-Scandinavia
Iola-Scandinavia (9-1, 3-1 Central Wisconsin Conference-8) defeated Tigerton (1-7, 1-4 Central Wisconsin Conference-10) 50-34 Friday. No other statistics were available.

Bowler drops game to Elcho
Elcho (4-4, 3-2 Northern Lakes Conference) defeated Bowler 51-33 Friday at the Elcho Tournament. The loss dropped Bowler’s record to 2-5. The are 1-4 in the Central Wisconsin Conference-10. No other information was available.

Clintonville girls outlast Chilton
Clintonville High School’s girls basketball team built a 21-12 advantage in the first half and then held off Chilton for a 45-39 victory Friday at the Seymour Holiday Classic. The win was the first of the season for the Truckers.
Ali Johnson led Clintonville (1-5, 0-3 Eastern Valley Conference) with 13 points. Callie Carpenter had six rebounds.
Claire Stievater paced Chilton (3-6, 2-3 Olympian Conference) with 17 points.
