Gresham boys capture tourney title
Gresham defeated Gibraltar 60-46 Saturday to win the varsity boys championship of the Gresham Booster Club Holiday Tournament.
No other information was available.
Menominee Indian won the boys consolation title with a 53-39 win over Oneida Nation.
In the junior varsity tourney, Gibraltar stopped Gresham 51-27 to claim the boys championship, and Menominee Indian defeated Wolf River Lutheran 25-19 in the consolation game.
Gresham placed two players, Scott Cerveny and Christian Haffner, on the all-tournament team. They were joined by Dustin Waupoose of Menominee Indian, Nick Kita of Gibraltar and Isiah Charles of Oneida Nation.
Bowler goes winless at Elcho tourney
Bowler High School’s boys basketball team (2-6, 1-4 Central Wisconsin Conference-10) fell to Palmyra-Eagle (3-6, 1-4 Rock Valley Conference-South) 49-37 Saturday at the Elcho Tournament. No other information was available.
Bowler lost its opening game of the tourney 51-33 to Elcho on Friday.
Bonduel cagers lose at Crivitz
A big third quarter lifted Crivitz past Bonduel 63-55 in a nonconference boys basketball game Monday at Crivitz High School.
Zach Zernicke scored 17 points and Colton Dobratz 13, including three 3-pointers, for Bonduel.
The Bears led 15-14 after one period and 29-24 at halftime, but Crivitz took the lead with a 20-9 scoring edge in the third quarter and then held off Bonduel 19-17 in the final period.
Three players scored in double figures for Crivitz (7-1, 4-1 Marinette & Oconto Conference), led by sophomore guard Jeremy Kralovetz’s 22 points. Kralovetz had four 3-pointers.
Coleman girls win Gresham tournament
Coleman defeated Oneida Nation 46-34 in the girls varsity championship Saturday at the Gresham Booster Club Holiday Tournament.
No other information was available.
Menominee Indian defeated Gresham 52-27 in the consolation game.
Coleman won the girls junior varsity title with a 16-13 win over Bowler. Menominee Indian posted a 40-16 win over Wolf River Lutheran in the consolation match.
Taylor Mahkimetas of Menominee Indian and Tylena Bohl of Gresham were named to the varsity all-tourney team, along with Natasha Stevens of Oneida Nation and Sammy Schaal and Makenzie Sadowski of Coleman.
Shiocton overcomes slow start vs. Marion
Despite holding Shiocton scoreless in the opening period, Marion proved no match for the Chiefs the rest of the way, losing 36-19 Saturday at home in girls basketball action.
Marion (5-2, 3-1 Central Wisconsin Conference-10) was outscored 26-7 in the second half.
No one scored in double digits in the game. Makenzie Thoma led Bowler with eight points. Carmen McCarthy and Peyton Moder each had eight for Shiocton (4-2, 2-1 Central Wisconsin Conference-8).
Clintonville offense falters at Seymour
The Clintonville High School girls basketball team failed to reach double figures in any quarter and scored only two points in the third period in a 38-20 loss Saturday to Denmark in the championship game of the Seymour Holiday Classic.
Autumn Voight had 11 of the Truckers’ 20 points.
Clintonville fell to 1-6 overall and stands 0-3 in the Eastern Valley Conference.
Denmark (5-2, 2-2 Bay Conference) was led by Britney Peterson with 13 and Jen Nehls with 12.
Witt-Birn girls defeat Rhinelander
The Wittenberg-Birnamwood High School girls basketball team took a big lead in the first half and then coasted to a 45-31 win over Rhinelander on Monday at WBHS.
The Chargers led 12-9 after one quarter, 28-16 at halftime and 37-23 after three periods. Witt-Birn and Rhinelander each scored eight points in the final stanza.
“The girls played hard tonight and fought off some rust from our 10-day layoff,” coach Mike Balliett said. “We had good, balanced scoring.”
Mikayla Hartman and Micah Nier each had 12 points for the Chargers, and Erika Alwes added 10. Siri Zeinert scored nine points. Taylor Bushman led the team in rebounding and assists with five each.
“I think Erika Alwes had her best game shooting so far this year,” Balliett said. “Consistent play in the post will really help this team.”
Syndie Smith led Rhinelander’s offense with 12 points.
Chargers finish 2nd at Oshkosh tourney
Wittenberg-Birnamwood fell four points short of the title at the Lourdes Academy on the Water wrestling tournament Saturday in Oshkosh.
Coleman won the meet with 321.5 points. Wittenberg-Birnamwood compiled 318 points. Random Lake was third with 293.5.
“It was a back-and-forth battle with Coleman all weekend, and it was fun being in that type of race with a great team,” W-B coach Troy Ostrowski said. “Hats off to the Coleman wrestlers and staff. They have great tradition.”
Braxton Potrykus won the Chargers’ only title, at 160 pounds, but 10 of the 14 Witt-Birn wrestlers placed in the tourney, which featured some of the best teams in the state. Potrykus (25-1) scored a 10-2 major decision over Coleman’s Dexter Karban (18-2) in the championship match.
Finishing second in their weight classes were Ben Vosters (120), who was pinned by Cottage Grove’s Collin LaBrosse in 5:52 of the final; Bobby Uttecht (132), who fell 3-2 to undefeated Jake Morgan, of Wilmot Union; and August Peplinski (195), who lost 2-1 to Oshkosh West’s Nick Osowski.
Also earning points for the Chargers were Zach Urquhart (113) and Hunter Kreger (182), both eighth; Stetson Potrykus (106), ninth; Alex Peplinski (170) 10th; and Gavin Czerwonka (126) and John White Wing (285), both 11th.
“I always preach to our wrestlers that we need to get better every week, and this week we did,” Ostrowski said.
Bonduel wrestlers finish 15th
Bonduel High School finished 15th among the 59 schools competing Friday and Saturday at the Lourdes Academy on the Water wrestling tournament in Oshkosh.
Bonduel scored 152.5 points at the meet, won by Coleman with 321.5 points.
Dan Tauchen placed the highest of the Bears wrestlers, losing the 152-pound battle for third place, 10-5, to Bryce Bennot, of Wautoma/Wild Rose.
Other top finishers for Bonduel were Austin Siolka (113), who finished ninth by pinning Cole Ellis, of Mosinee in 2:20; Garrett Siolka (120), who lost his ninth-place match by fall in 59 seconds to Michael Bertrand, of Southern Door; Mitch Sokolski (160), who lost a 5-2 decision to Kordell Schmoll, of Kimberly in their 11th-place match; and Bennett Gunderson (195), who was pinned in 2:01 of the 11th-place match by Brady Jacobson, of Ripon.
