Paul Herzog was eliminated from the field of candidates competing for a position on the Gillett School Board. According to unofficial results from Tuesday’s primary, Herzog received 66 votes, the lowest among the five candidates. Four others will advance to the April 1 election. Jamie Heroux, with 96 votes, led all candidates. Incumbents Nanette Mohr and John Timm followed, with 88 and 85 votes respectively.

What I’ll do for money the second week, I have no idea.” This might evoke a chuckle until you learn how many future seniors will be walking in Maxine’s ugly orthopedic slippers. A retirement crisis is brewing in America, and reliable experts agree the fallout will be catastrophic.

I play golf pretty regularly with some guys who also play poker on a fairly regular basis. They play every week; it’s hard to be more regular than that. I don’t join them because I know very little about poker. They’d probably like me to play, though, because I would surely lose a lot of money. Regardless of my ignorance of the game, I am aware of many poker terms that have sneaked into our everyday language.

Those who live along the path around the Falls and are somewhat obsessed with the calendar know there are critical markers as we wind our way through each year. Even though February is the shortest month, it has a number of important markers. Friday was Valentine’s Day, one of those special days creating high levels of stress at flower shops, where the delivery list most likely is longer than any other day in the year.

The Oconto Falls High School boys basketball team earned a No. 4 seed in the WIAA Division 3 regional tournament. The Panthers will host No. 5 Wittenberg-Birnamwood to open the playoffs Tuesday. The winner will face No. 1 Peshtigo in Peshtigo on Feb. 28. In Division 5, Gillett is a No. 3 seed and will host No. 6 Sevastopol on Tuesday. It was a bittersweet day for the Oconto Falls High School wrestling team at the WIAA Division 2 regional Saturday at OFHS. The young Panthers advanced six wrestlers to sectionals, but did not qualify for the team sectionals for the first time in a number of years. “Six was kind of the magic number,” Oconto Falls tri-head coach Marc Kinziger said.

Led by senior McKenna Larsen’s 25 points, the Oconto Falls High School girls basketball team beat Bonduel 52-40 in a nonconference game Friday night in Bonduel. “It was a well-played high school basketball game,” Oconto Falls coach Mike Kaczmarek said.

The Oconto Falls High School boys basketball team was an underdog going into the Bay Conference game with Shawano on Feb. 11. When the Panthers handed the Hawks 25 extra chances — that is 25 turnovers — the mismatch only grew. Oconto Falls (3-16, 2-13 Bay) lost to Shawano 59-33. “I picked these guys (Shawano) to be one of the surprise teams in the conference; these guys are good,” Oconto Falls coach Kirk Hirst said.
