Bears get win after 2-week layoff

The Bonduel High School girls basketball team beat Sturgeon Bay 47-25 in a nonconference game Friday in Sturgeon Bay. The Bears (6-1, 2-1 Central Wisconsin Conference-8) jumped out big in the third quarter, outscoring Sturgeon Bay (3-4, 2-3 Packerland) 12-3 to take a 33-18 lead. “We worked on our defense tonight,” Bonduel coach Missy Dowden said. “We haven’t been able to work on it through the first couple games.” Sturgeon Bay tried two different defenses to slow Bonduel down, but was forced out of both by quick scores by the Bears. Jennifer Dowden, a 5-foot-11 junior forward, led the team with 20 points, 10 rebounds and four assists. Taylor Weier had eight points and 10 rebounds. “Taylor Weier stepped up real well tonight,” Missy Dowden said. Alexa Reinke and Deanna Zernicke both added five points each. The Bears are off until Thursday, when they play CWC-8 foe Weyauwega-Fremont (5-2, 1-2 CWC-8), but the coach is satisfied with her team’s play. “I like what I see,” Missy Dowden said. “We still have a learning curve and some things to straighten out and get fixed here. They are really coming around and understanding things. I was a little nervous having the two weeks off.”
