Bears fourth at Brawl in the Falls

Austin Siolka led all Bonduel High School wrestlers in winning the 113-pound championship Saturday at the Brawl in the Falls wrestling tournament in Oconto Falls. The Bears took fourth in the 15-team tournament, scoring 167 points. Kaukauna (200.5) won, followed by Reedsville (178) and Oconto Falls (172.5). “We probably didn’t do as well as we were hoping to,” Bonduel coach Chris Rank said. “We were hoping to come away with a trophy, first or second place. We came up a little short. Those types of things are going to happen.” Siolka beat Gillett/Suring’s Garret Kohls in the 113-pound championship match, pinning him in 5 minutes and 52 seconds. Siolka beat Kaukauna’s Dominick Nushart in the quarterfinal and Ashwaubenon’s Montana Richardson in the semifinal. “He did a nice job,” Rank said. “We had a handful of guys do a very nice job for us.” Two Bears placed second: Mitch Sokolski (160) and Travis Wollenberg (126). “They didn’t quite get the championship, but they did a nice job getting to the finals,” Rank said. “They had a great day for us.” Sokolski lost his championship match against Reedsville’s Elliott Ebert by a 14-3 major decision. He defeated New Holstein’s Jacob Barth in the quarterfinal and Wautoma/Wild Rose’s Marcus Kasuboski in the semifinal. Wollenberg lost his championship match by pin to Kaukauna’s Nick Arnold. Wollenberg defeated Oconto Falls’ Jake Stoinski 8-0 in the semifinal. Garrett Siolka (120) took third place by pinning Ashwaubenon’s Spencer Nelsen in 3:46. Jacob Wudtke (170) won his third-place match over Ashwaubenon’s Victorico Perez by a 13-4 major decision. Dan Tauchen (152) also took third with a pin in 5:21 of Gillett/Suring’s Colin Weiss. “All three of those were really tough weight classes,” Rank said. “We ended up coming up on the short end.” The coach was happy for the opportunity to see Reedsville, which the Bears will encounter in the Division 3 regional. “That was nice for us to compete against them and see their team,” Rank said. Bonduel will now turn its focus to hosting Wittenberg-Birnamwood on Thursday. “Wittenberg-Birnamwood has a really tough team this year,” Rank said. “We’re a very good team ourselves. … Our goal is to go in and be competitive with them. We want them to know that they’re in for a good match.”
