Longtime Falls banker makes transition to town government

An Oconto Falls woman with more than 20 years of banking experience has been hired as the Little Suamico clerk/treasurer. Nikki Tolzman, 42, was selected to replace Eileen Bardouche, treasurer for 33 years, and Sandy Pagel, clerk for 39 years, who both retired at the end of 2013. The Town Board voted to combine the positions and approved the employment of Tolzman in November. Although she officially begins work Jan. 1, she met with Bardouche and Pagel before year’s end to learn more about her new position. “They are super ladies. There’s some big shoes to fill,” Tolzman said. “They know their jobs in and out are are very supportive.” A graduate of Oconto Falls High School, Tolzman began her banking career in 1992 as a teller at bank in Gillett. Over the next two decades, she worked at banks in Oconto Falls, Gillett and Green Bay. She has experience with mortgage lending, bookkeeping, teller supervision and compliance. In addition to her banking career, she has worked in the office of the family business, G & S Refuse Inc., of Oconto Falls, gaining experience in accounts receivable and payroll. Tolzman said the combined knowledge she gained in each sector will prove useful as the clerk/treasurer. “There’s definitely going to be some new challenges, and I’m looking forward to them,” she said. The clerk/treasurer is responsible for the municipal finances, elections, record keeping, tax collection and clerical duties for the town. The position is part-time, 20 hours a week. Tolzman has enrolled in training courses and said she is accustomed to using the resources available—people, online lessons and reading material—to learn new things. “In all the years with banking, there’s always been new things,” she said. The spring election on April 1 will be her first experience overseeing the polls. “It’ll be fun and interesting, and I look forward to meeting the town residents,” she said. Tolzman lives in the town of Oconto Falls with her husband, Nick, and their daughter, Josie.
