Lee Anna Mae Malueg

On Aug. 14, 2013, Lee Anna Mae Malueg (Scheider) passed away peacefully at the Dixie Regional Medical Center in St. George, Utah, at the age of 87. Lee Anna had led a wonderful life. Growing up in Shawano, she and her sister were known as the ”Scheider girls” around town and among their peers. Upon graduating from high school in 1944 she attended Downer College in Milwaukee and earned a business degree. She returned to Shawano to work at Badger Breeders and in 1950 met and married Waldemar E. Malueg, a bank examiner for the FDIC. They moved to various locations over the following years, but relocated to Zachow in 1955 to manage the Farmers State Bank in Zachow and Cecil. In 1964, Lee Anna and Walt moved the family back to her childhood home in Shawano. Here they finished raising their children. In 1977, Lee Anna and Walt moved to Milwaukee where she worked at the Marine Bank and managed an apartment complex on Milwaukee’s upper east side. They enjoyed the metropolitan life, but also yearned for the more pastoral climes they knew from their childhoods. They would take many long trips to the western U.S. looking for a place to start their next adventure. In 1990, after Walt retired from the Wisconsin Revenue Department they moved out to Louisville, Colo., to manage two apartment complexes and slowly transition into full retirement and be closer to their grandchildren in Boulder. In late 1999, Lee Anna was struck down with an unknown illness and was given a less than 10 percent chance to live. She narrowly survived, but completely recovered — a testament to her indomitable internal strength and spirit. After recovery in early 2000 she and Walt relocated to St. George, Utah, and entered full retirement. They lived in a beautiful brick home in a retirement community with a wonderful vivacious rose garden and a productive peach tree that were her pride and joy. Walt passed away in 2003 and she continued to live on her own until her final days. In the last year she had a series of falls that had her in and out of short-term rehabilitation, but she would not bow to adversity. She kept on going and refused to allow her ailments and declining physical abilities to contain her. She was a force. On Friday, Aug. 9, she suffered a series of mini strokes while in her beloved rose garden under her peach tree. She survived to see her 87th birthday (Aug. 13), and the next day God called her home. Her work here was complete. So many people will miss her. Lee Anna was a vibrant woman, beautiful inside and out, tremendously creative, with a wonderful sense of humor. She made friends easily and people gravitated toward her wherever she went. Her last years in St. George were filled with wonderful memories spending time in Las Vegas with her son and taking day trips out into the scenic wilds of Utah and Nevada with him. The people of St. George treated her and Walt with extraordinary kindness, compassion and respect. At every restaurant she frequented, the waitresses would come up, kiss and hug her, and chat. Local businesses went out of their way to accommodate her and help her. She touched many people’s lives. She was a special woman. She is survived by her daughter, Barbara (Merrigan); her son, Daniel; and her two grandchildren, Arik and Kris Skromme. She was a tremendous dog/animal lover and she supported the Best Friends of Kanab, Utah. She would have loved that people would donate to this worthy charity in her name.
