It took nearly seven decades, but on July 2, the U.S. Army finally acknowledged its longstanding debt to a young soldier from Shawano wounded during the waning days of World War II. Pvt. Donald “Buck” Brener — an 18-year-old graduate of the Shawano High School Class of 1944 — was injured by a tank shell in Nazi Germany in April 1945.

Hartland is out of the Shawano County Farmland Preservation Plan after a dispute between the town and state officials regarding a map could not be resolved. The county steering committee voted 9-1 to move ahead with the plan minus Hartland’s map, despite objections from the town’s officials and a consultant that helped Hartland develop its map.

Auto theft An Antigo man is due to make an initial court appearance Monday on a felony charge of auto theft that allegedly took place in the village of Aniwa in March. Jason W. Schreiber, 37, was arrested on the evening of March 21 after he allegedly sped away from an attempt by a Langlade County sheriff’s deputy to pull him over.

The Shawano Youth League will host 22 teams for it’s 11-under and 12-under baseball tournaments starting Friday at Memorial Park in Shawano. The Shawano County Finance Committee found out earlier this week that establishing a zero-based budget system for the county could be a long time coming. Jay Moynihan, community resource development educator for the county’s University of Wisconsin-Extension office, told the committee that it would probably take a minimum of three years to implement the system.

Anne E. Baldwin, 87, New London, died on Tuesday, July 16, 2013, at Evergreen Care Center, Shawano. She was born on July 8, 1926, in Pray to the late Paul and Anna (Mazur) Jagielo. (They were early Wisconsin homesteaders.) On Sept. 1, 1945, Anne was united in marriage to Robert Baldwin in Little Rock, Ark. They lived on a farm north of New London from 1962-2008. Bob preceded her in death in 2006.
