Baumann qualifies for golf sectionals

Courtney Baumann earned a trip to the WIAA sectional Wednesday, finishing 17th with a round of 99 at the Division 1 regional at Crystal Springs Golf Course in Seymour. Baumann, a Shawano senior, was the fourth and final individual qualifier, edging out teammate Megan Beck, who finished with a round of 100. Wauwatosa woman wins top award at WOWSpace
Julia Collins, of Wauwatosa, claimed Best of Show in the “Go Green” show at the WOWSpace in Wittenberg with her work titled “Progress.” This is the third award for Collins in WOW shows. She received an Award of Excellence in 2012 for “Arizona,” an oil portrait of a Native American woman potter, and an Award of Honor in 2011 for “Monty and Linda,” a watercolor of two frolicking horses. In the center of “Progress” is a rich green primeval forest.

Love-struck deer pose hazard to motorists
Motorists should be keeping an especially keen eye out for deer over the next couple of months as the mating season gets under way, according to the Wisconsin Department of Transportation. The season is at its peak in October and November and deer are more active, particularly at dusk and dawn when they move back and forth between their bedding and feeding areas.

Petting zoo zoning exception tabled
A special zoning exception for the petting zoo at Anello’s Torch Lite was tabled by the Plan Commission on Wednesday amid questions about federal rules that couldn’t be immediately answered due to the government shutdown. The commission seemed inclined to grant the special exception, with the proviso that the petting zoo maintain a license granted by the U.S.

Expanded possibilities at SCHS
The dust is finally settling on a $900,000 expansion at Shawano Community High School, giving agriculture and technical education classes a little more wiggle room. The first big unveiling took place Wednesday night for parents of students enrolled in tech ed classes, and an open house and tours are scheduled for Oct.

June R. Buchberger, 75, of Clintonville, passed away Friday morning, Sept. 27, 2013, at the Appleton Medical Center. June was born on May 29, 1938, in Clintonville, the daughter of the late Herman and Alma (Schoeneck) Ebert. June lived her entire life in Clintonville, where she graduated from high school in 1955. Sam W. House Sr.
Sam W. House Sr., 79, of Shawano, passed away Sunday, Sept. 29, 2013, in Appleton. Born on Oct. 17, 1933, in Dickson County, Tenn., he was the son of the late Pauletta (Carr) Snead. On Jan. 24, 1955, he was united in marriage to Shirley A. Anderson in Chicago. After marriage the couple moved to the town of Red Springs, where they owned and operated a dairy farm for nearly 30 years.

Otto Wagner Jr.
Otto Wagner Jr., 86, of the town of Hartland, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2013, in Shawano. Born on Sept. 10, 1927, in the town of Hartland, he was the son of the late Otto and Ida (Krause) Wagner. Otto lived his entire life on the family farm in the town of Hartland. He also worked as a mechanic for the Shawano County Highway Department for many years. On Jan. 29, 1949, he was united in marriage to Margaret Ann Bernarde.
