The Oneida Nation has thrown its support behind the Menominee Nation’s plan to open a casino in Kenosha, leaving only two Wisconsin Indian tribes that haven’t given their blessings to the proposal. Gov. Scott Walker said the Menominee would need Wisconsin’s 10 other tribes to approve of the project before he would grant it his own approval and allow it to proceed.

Local residents are feeling the pinch in their wallets when they go grocery shopping. The third quarter Marketbasket Survey done by the Wisconsin Farm Bureau shows food prices in Shawano have increased in dollars over the last 12 months, while the state total has increased by cents. The total for 16 select items in Shawano was $53.75 for the three-month period ending Sept. 30, according to the survey.

Two people were arrested on drug-related charges after authorities executed a search warrant Friday morning on Killdeer Lane in the town of Aniwa. The warrant was obtained after an investigation provided probable cause that the use and delivery of controlled substances were allegedly occurring at the residence, the Shawano County Sheriff’s Department said. Shawano County’s share of area residents’ property tax bills is expected to drop slightly in 2014 if the Board of Supervisors approves the proposed 2014 budget Wednesday. The plan includes a drop of about 0.87 percent, or 4.5 cents, in the tax rate, from $5.167 per $1,000 of equalized value this year to $5.122 next year.

Although physical evidence was scarce, an Oconto County jury Thursday found a rural Shawano man guilty of two counts of homicide. The jury deliberated almost five hours before announcing Daniel Schmidt, 30, was guilty of murdering his ex-mistress, Kimberly Rose, and her brother, Leonard Marsh, in 2009. Leona M. Juedes, of Bonduel, passed away on Tuesday, Oct. 15, 2013, in Shawano at the age of 94. Leona was born on April 15, 1919, in the town of Hartland to William and Amelia (Timm) Lauersdorf. On Dec. 14, 1941, she was married to Lester Juedes at Friedens Church in Bonduel. They farmed for many years, and after retirement moved to Shawano.
