DI team to present veterans’ project at global event

A team of local students will make and preserve history by competing in the Destination Imagination Global Finals this month. Five Oconto Falls High School students will compete in the Global Finals from May 20-23 at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. Team W.O.W.

BASEBALL Oconto Falls 4 New London 2 Extra innings were required for the Panthers to earn a victory in the second game of a doubleheader Saturday against New London. With the score tied 2-2 after seven innings, junior Tyler Hagemeier hit a two-out single to score junior catcher Mike Manns and senior Brett Ash.
Panthers take third at OFHS Invitational
Oconto Falls High School used two top finishes to claim third place Thursday in the girls portion of the 65th annual Oconto Falls Invitational. Algoma won the meet with 149 points. Senior Kayla Virtues won the shot put, landing a throw at 36 feet, 8 inches, and junior Bailey Wolf claimed the 1,600-meter run in 5 minutes, 33.41 seconds at the state’s oldest invitational, which was held at Memorial Field for the final time.
Oconto Falls takes first in historical send-off
The Oconto Falls High School boys track team ended the Oconto Falls Invitational’s run at Memorial Field in style Thursday. The Panthers placed first among 10 teams in the 65th annual meet, the oldest high school invitational in Wisconsin.
US senator rolls through Shawano
Darlene Ross, president of the Lake Country Republican Women, has been an ardent supporter of U.S. Sen. Ron Johnson since he ran for his current seat in 2010. So Ross felt it was only appropriate to say hello Saturday when the senator stopped at Glas the Green Coffeehouse in Shawano as part of a tour of northeast Wisconsin. “I’ve known him for years,” Ross said.
Past speedway champs return to victory lane
Former track champions Nick Anvelink, Jerry Wilinski and Tracy Wassenberg each raced to their first wins of the year Saturday at the historic half-mile Shawano Speedway. Justin Jacobsen held off a defending track champion for his first win of the year, and Jasper Drengler again showed why he is one of the top pilots in the area. Alleged drunken driver arrested in stolen car
A 30-year-old Shawano man was arrested for drunken driving in a stolen vehicle Thursday, according to a Shawano County Sheriff’s Department Facebook posting. The Sheriff’s Department said the man was taken into custody at about 4 p.m.
Dinner served for Main St. event
Dinner plans are already made for Thursday as the Shawano Business Improvement District will hold “The Main Event” restaurant dine-around to raise money for its facade improvement projects. Eight restaurants on or near Main Street will serve up a variety of foods from 5-8:30 p.m. for hungry guests and provide an idea of the wide variety of dining selections in downtown Shawano.
