“A city has to be responsible to its residents to provide affordable housing.” — Esther Sanchez The city of Shawano Housing Authority (HA) provides adequate and affordable housing and a suitable safe environment free from discrimination. To be eligible for housing, the family’s gross annual income may not exceed the applicable income limit, which is established and revised annually by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).

There is something about the thought of company that will cause something to break down. The last time I had company over the weekend, the hot water heater quit working. I knew they may not take a shower, but I also knew I would need to wash dishes, and they would like to wash up with something warmer than cold water. I called the local plumber, and he came on Saturday morning to make the repair.

Because we live so closely to wooded critters, once in awhile they wander too close, invading our territory and unfortunately have to be disposed of. Thankfully it doesn’t happen too often, but for safety’s sake, for the humans and animals that live here, it’s a necessity.

For 29 years the Shawano and Waupaca counties’ Association for Family and Community Education have hosted a Fall Learn-In. This year’s event will be held Wednesday at The Main Event, 206 N. Lemke St., in Cecil. “It’s open to the entire public,” said Nancy Schultz, Shawano County family living educator and coordinator of the event. The day begins at 8:30 a.m. with registration. At 9:35 a.m.

Barb Teetzen is a 4-H leader, and she and her family volunteer at St. Jakobi Church in the town of Richmond. She is a Shawano native, graduating from Shawano High School. Teetzen worked at Montgomery Ward, Wisconsin Finance and J.C. Penney before beginning work in the personnel office at the Shawano County courthouse in 1977. Teetzen then worked for 16 years in the University of Wisconsin-Extension office.

The Menominee Indian High School football team beat Marion/Tigerton 42-14 in a nonconference game Friday in Marion. The Eagles (2-3, 1-1 Northern Lakes) tied the game 14-14 on a Dallas Madosh hail mary that Michael Pecore hauled in for a touchdown just before halftime.

A failed 2-point conversion in the fourth quarter sealed the Bonduel High School football team’s 21-19 loss to Central Wisconsin Conference-8 foe Iola-Scandinavia Friday night in Iola. The Bears scored on a 22-yard Colton Dobratz touchdown throw to Zach Zernicke to cut Iola-Scandinavia’s lead to 21-19.
