There was no letting up of the east wind that blew briskly across the path around the Falls on Sunday. It continued for the start of the work week. The east wind has had a reputation in literature, weather forecasting and ice sculpture. A spectacular example of the east wind’s power can be seen in Oconto. With the right conditions, a massive pile of ice can build at the end of the long breakwater reaching into the Bay of Green Bay.

The Gillett High School forensics team of 28 students recently completed a successful season. The team participated in the Marinette & Oconto Conference meet in Wausaukee on Feb. 3. Maya Breed, Brittany Fetterly and Ray Brock received perfect scores and gold medals. Gillett hosted the SubDistrict Festival with Lena and Oconto on Feb. 24. The district competition took place in Tomahawk and Marinette in March.

Shawano residents will likely need to wait at least another three to five days before they will be able to view sturgeon spawning along the Wolf River at the Shawano dam. Ryan Koenigs, of the Department of Natural Resources, reports there is little activity in the Shawano area due to the cold weather.

Shawano Dollars for Scholars celebrated two records Friday at its annual gala held at The Gathering in Shawano. Now that Easter is past, and the calendars are about to turn to May, I see the grass is beginning to spring up in yards and fields. Those rainy days that I am not fond of are helping the process of greening things up. Some of the trees have begun to bud out, and soon the leaves will spring forth. This time of year is pure joy to watch the different hues of green as I travel throughout the countryside.

The fields are sitting dormant just now, but soon plow, disk and drag will turn the supple, rich soil and the planting season will begin. I try not to think too far ahead because I tend to get overwhelmed with the amount of work waiting for us. One day at a time, Lord!

Tigerton Fire Department volunteers not only fight fires, but also keep the equipment in fine condition and continue their training throughout the year. Each volunteer has to have 120 hours of training. “That’s the least they can do to be a fireman,” said Jack Mauritz, who has been the fire chief for five years.
