Saunders wins first career feature at Speedway
Travis VanStraten stayed hot Saturday, winning his sixth, and second straight, IMCA Stock Car feature of the year at the 10th annual Bud Lynn Memorial Night at the Shawano Speedway. Third-generation racer Brock Saunders led all but one lap and won his first ever IMCA Sport Mod feature. Tim Rothe led throughout the Late Model feature for his second win of the season. Marcus Yarie won his third IMCA Modified feature of the season.
Packers, Favre reconcile; No. 4 to be retired
Brett Favre and the Green Bay Packers envision the to-be-determined 2015 game for No. 4’s retirement ceremony starting like this: Favre and Bart Starr walk together to midfield as honorary captains for the pregame coin flip. Aaron Rodgers is there as one of the Packers’ captains.
Edna Dea Knight
Edna Dea Knight died peacefully at Vista Mesa Assisted Living Residence in Cortez, Colorado, on Friday, July 25, 2014. She was born the daughter of Cy and Mattie (Kirkland) Jones in Hughes County, Oklahoma, on Feb. 13, 1928. Edna will be greatly missed for her great capacity for love, her unshakable faith in God and her infectious sunny disposition. Her loving care for all around her will be long cherished.
Telka N. Novak
Telka N. Novak, 68, of Oneida and Bowler, passed away Sunday, Aug. 3, 2014, in Shawano. Born on May 28, 1946, she was the daughter of the late Nelson and Rebecca (Schuyler) Ninham. Telka was united in marriage to Robert J. Novak on Aug. 5, 1994. Telka was a certified nursing assistant for the Ella Besaw Center. She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in the town of Morris, where she served as a visitation volunteer.
Gary Ralph Stevens
Gary R. Stevens, 50, of Bowler, passed away Sunday, Aug. 3, 2014, from injuries sustained on his 2014 Ultra Classic Motorcycle. He was born Nov. 18, 1963, in Janesville, the son of Ralph Stevens and Elsa Church. Gary was an adventure enthusiast and thrill seeker who liked his toys. He was a great guy who could make friends with anyone, and he could light up a room with his big laugh and knee slaps.
Memory care facility under construction in Oconto Falls
A groundbreaking took place Thursday for Oconto Falls’ first assisted living facility aimed to serve a growing population of individuals suffering from memory loss and dementia. The Cottages at MeadowLands Memory Care will be built at 715 E.
Shawano schools getting more bandwidth
The Shawano School Board unanimously endorsed a request Monday to spend $287,000 from its fund balance to upgrade the district’s server switches to better handle computer traffic. The last major upgrade of the server switches was in 2007, according to Craig Young, the district’s technology director, although yearly maintenance is conducted.
