Clintonville city administrator tab tops $100K

The city of Clintonville spent more than $100,000 on the Common Council’s investigation and subsequent agreement with former City Administrator Lisa Kotter. Alderperson Lois Bressette disclosed the information at a recent council meeting “in the interest in transparency.” Bressette said the city spent $14,851 on outside legal help, $7,450 on the investigation, $58,611 to Kotter as part of the agreement, $18,729 in benefits for Kotter and a vacati

Varlin F. Basina
Varlin F. Basina Sr., 80, of Neopit, passed away on Tuesday, March 31, 2015, at his home. He was born on Dec. 17, 1934, in Keshena, the son of the late Francis and Iva (Peters) Basina. On May 19, 1962, Varlin was united in marriage to Delia Wilber in Manitowoc. He lived in the Keshena and Neopit area all his life and was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church in Neopit. Varlin worked for J.I. Case in Wausau for 25 years before retiring.

Helen L. Smarzewski, 74, of Shawano, passed away on Monday, March 30, 2015, at her home. Helen was born on April 22, 1941, in Daggett, Michigan, the daughter of the late Arthur and Ellen (Carlson) Johnson.

Edith Knepfel
Edith Knepfel, of Saukville, passed away in the evening hours of Thursday, March 26, 2015, at Heritage Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Port Washington. She was 80 years old. Edith was born on July 18, 1934, in Shawano, daughter of Robert Engel Sr. and Gertrude Gralow Engel. She grew up on the family dairy farm and enjoyed participating in many 4-H activities, including showing dairy cattle. She also liked playing piano and the saxophone.

Marie M. Gluth
Marie M. Gluth, 89, of Clintonville, passed away Monday morning, March 30, 2015, at Pine Manor Healthcare Center in Embarrass. Marie was born on Nov. 22, 1925, in the Township of Bear Creek, Waupaca County, as the daughter of the late John and Mabel (Burton) Stilen. On June 19, 1948, she was united in marriage to Paul A. Gluth at St. Martin Lutheran Church in Clintonville. The couple resided in Clintonville their entire married life.

Marie C. Hagen
Our sister, Marie Constance Hagen, joined our loved ones in Heaven on Sunday, March 29, 2015. She was born in Shawano on Christmas Day 1958 to Bertrand and Helen (Nelessen) Hagen. Marie lived a long life with the challenges of Downs Syndrome. For 27 years, Marie was under the tender loving care of Dorothy and Edward Hahn, of Waupaca. Dorothy is truly an angel sent by God to do His most loving work.

Imogene May Toellner, 81, of Bonduel, passed away on Saturday, March 28, 2015, in Green Bay. Imogene was born to the late Arthur S. and Evelyn (James) Naparalla on May 23, 1933, in Shawano County, the oldest of five children. She was united in marriage to Leonard J. Toellner on Oct. 18, 1952, in Bonduel.

Sandra M. Ponfil
Sandra M. “Sandy” Ponfil, 75, of Neopit, passed away on Saturday, March 28, 2015. Sandy was born in Keshena on Oct. 5, 1939, to the late Robert D. and Mary (Neconish) Soman. After attending Antigo High School, Sandra moved to Chicago, where she lived until returning to the Menominee area. She was a generous, kind-hearted, fun-loving person with a great sense of humor.

Homonym trips up Shawano girl at state spelling bee
Karelyn Malliet’s third trip to the Badger State Spelling Bee ended with a top-five finish Saturday but not a trip to the national bee. Malliet, an eighth-grade student at Shawano Community Middle School, competed with 47 other students Saturday in Madison and finished in a tie for fourth place, narrowly missing her second straight trip to the E.W.

Shawano council approves Smalley Park deal
The heirs to the original Shawano Medical Center property will get both a park and a cash settlement under an agreement approved this week by the Shawano Common Council.
