Nearly 40 outdoor enthusiasts participated in the first Shawano Pathways winter hike of 2026 on Jan. 3 at Kroenke Lake State Natural Area.
The event, a moonlight hike held on the night of the Wolf Moon — the first full moon of the new year — featured a winter trek through the state natural area and around the lake.
Although clouds covered the moon for much of the evening, participants still enjoyed the quiet beauty of the snowy landscape. Hikers were able to choose from various distances, making the event welcoming to a wide range of abilities.
Warm refreshments served around a fire pit provided a cozy gathering spot before and after the hike.
Four additional hikes are scheduled as part of the 2026 Shawano Pathways winter hike series:
• Jan. 24, 1:30 p.m., Cotter Creek Trails, W9050 Broadway Road, Shawano.
• Jan. 31, 6 p.m., moonlight hike, Maple Hills Recreation Area, N4270 State Highway 22, Shawano.
• Feb. 22, 1:30 p.m., Maple Hills Recreation Area.
• March 7, 9:30 a.m., maple sugar hike, Sugar Shack Trails, N7061 Ash Road, Shawano.
Various hike lengths will be offered at each event to encourage hikers of all abilities to participate. Whether you are a seasoned snowshoer or a first-time winter hiker, these events offer a unique way to experience the Shawano landscape.
Participants should arrive 15 minutes early to register and put on gear. Bring your own snowshoes and water. If snow conditions are limited, cleats or Yaktrax worn over boots are recommended. Participants are also encouraged to complete the annual liability waiver online prior to the event at www.shawanopathways.org/annual-liability-waiver.
Weather conditions may cause cancellations. Updates will be posted on Facebook and on the Shawano Pathways website at www.shawanopathways.org.
The events are free but donations are appreciated.
