Bay Area 3, Eau Claire Area 2
For the first time this season, the Bay Area Ice Bears found themselves trailing an opponent when they faced the Eau Claire Area Stars in Hayward.
Down 1-0 in the first period and then 2-1 in the third period, Bay Area scored twice in rapid succession to tie and then take the lead, beating Eau Claire Area 3-2.
The Stars scored first at 2:24 in the first period, but Hannah Von Haden tied the game at 1-1 just 21 seconds later with an assist from Mya Sheppard.
After a scoreless second frame, the Stars retook the lead early in the third period. Ava McDonald tied the score at 2-2 with another Sheppard assist, and Aisling Buchan had the winning goal 26 seconds later with Lily Lyons assisting.
The Stars were penalized four times for eight minutes, and the Ice Bears had six penalties for 12 minutes.
Eau Claire Area’s goalie, Evie Pritzl, had 39 saves against 42 shots on goal. Bay Area’s Reese Spiering had 16 saves against 18 shots on goal.
Bay Area 8, Chippewa Falls/Menomonie 0
The Ice Bears opened tournament play by shutting out the Chippewa Falls/Menomonie Sabers 8-0.
Hannah Von Haden and Lily Lyons each had two goals, all four of them coming in the first period.
Von Haden’s first goal came just 21 seconds into the game with an assist from Ava McDonald. At 1:27, Lyons scored with McDonald and Mya Sheppard assisting. Von Haden scored unassisted, and then teamed up with Sheppard to assist Lyons on her second goal.
The Ice Bears scored three times in the second frame, each goal by a different player.
Aisling Buchan scored 32 seconds into the period with help from Lyons and Von Haden. Faye Brunke, with a Von Haden assist, scored next, and Bridget Welsing scored the third goal with assists from Elliana Memken and Abby Mommaerts.
Malin Jewitt scored for Bay Area in the third. Assisting were Addison Dahl and Madeline Engles.
The Sabers were called for two penalties for four minutes, and the Ice Bears had five penalties for 10 minutes.
Bay Area had more than three times as many shots on goal as the Sabers, 44-14.
Ice Bears goalie Reese Spiering had 14 saves, and Sabers goalie Aubrie Dowd had 36.
