Shawano’s mayoral and city council incumbents up for election in April have taken out paperwork to run for another term.
Mayor Bruce Milavitz and Aldermen Jim Hauer, Jack Young and John Hoeffs all appear to be defending their seats, unless any of them make a statement of non-candidacy prior to Dec. 26. City Clerk Lesley Nemetz said that all four have taken out paperwork, but none have returned anything yet, and there are currently no other candidates who have taken out papers to challenge them.
According to Nemetz, aldermanic candidates need between 20 and 40 signatures of registered voters in their district, while mayoral candidates must get at least 50 signatures to qualify for the ballot because it is a citywide elected position.
Hauer represents the Second Aldermanic District, which represents the Third and Fourth Wards, while Young represents the Fourth Aldermanic District and Hoeffs represents the Sixth Aldermanic District. Any challengers would need to be living within those districts. A map of districts can be found at www.cityofshawano.com.
The deadline for submitting election paperwork is 5 p.m. Jan. 6. If there are more than two candidates for any of the seats, there will be a primary election Feb. 17. The spring general election for 2026 is April 7.
