Hawks open season with shutout

Garret Schlise scored two goals as the Shawano Community High School boys soccer team opened its season Tuesday with a 5-0 victory over visiting Freedom. The win was a good start for a team with high expectations. “They played well,” Shawano coach Bob Croschere said. “They played together as a team and I was happy with what happened tonight, for the most part.” The Hawks’ victory began with an unassisted Schlise goal 9:25 into the match. Schlise added another goal unassisted 16:24 into the second half, putting the Hawks up 3-0, and assisted on a Benjamin Marquardt goal with 15:02 left that put Shawano up 5-0. “(Schlise is) off to a good start. It’s what I’ve come to expect from him,” Croschere said. “He takes a lot of shots and with the amount of shots he does take, he should put in a goal or two.” Schlise had about half of the Hawks’ 10 shots on goal. “If every goal goes in, games are going to be over pretty quickly,” Croschere said. “We had a lot of opportunities.” Zach Dickmann added Shawano’s second goal at the 29:31 mark on a free kick. Later in that half, Dickmann drew a red card for swearing. Shawano never missed a beat, though, with three goals in the second half and solid defensive play. “Defensively, as a group, I thought we played solid,” Croschere said. “I don’t think we gave them a lot of good opportunities. They didn’t have many clean shots. We controlled the ball well.” Shawano goalie Mike Meisner corralled all three of Freedom’s shots on goal. “He made a couple good saves. He didn’t face a lot of really good shots,” Croschere said. “He played solid back there. He had some kicks that travelled some distances.” Braden Mueller scored Shawano’s fourth goal with 17:55 left to play. The Hawks have three more nonconference matches before hitting Bay Conference play against New London on Sept. 5.
